Default 4.10, M6 guys that actually drive your cars...

Mine's an M6... I rarely take it to the track. It's mainly just a fun little street car that I also road trip in... wondering if 4.10's will be "too much" for what I do w/ it.

Are 4.10's too much for the highway/road trips?

Any 2nd thoughts on maybe should have gone w/ 3.73's?

Thoughts?

You will love that gear ratio. I can't imagine going with anything else. I wouldn't change a thing. I love my 4.10's. I mainly use my car for car shows & cruises. In 5th at 70MPH, my RPM's are right at 2100-2200 (with 6th gear on standby which I never use). IMO, 3.73's would be a waste of time and money in a M6.

My buddy has 4.10s in his 2002 T/A and the car drives great. That being said, I have 3.42s with a far more radical cam than his and my car drives great. 3.73s are a waste of time and money, IMO, stick with stock or go 4.10 (or higher); with .50:1 in 6th gear you can get away with a lot of gear and still be nice on the highway.

Thanks. I'm still running 3.42's... but I need to start specking out a rear and guess it's about time I figured out which gears I wanna run.

Your better off with 3.90's. They are stronger and load the engine harder instead of just revving.

3.73's on a M6 generally aren't worth the time (however there are some exceptions). I was leaning towards 4.10s, however I ended up going with a 3.90 because it gives me those extra mph in 4th I wanted for the track.

With the 6th gear on these cars, you're not going to take a terrible hit on the mileage. Different story if you have an A4.

I love my 4.10s and commute to college with them. Excited now though that they are 4.11s instead of 4.10s

Right around 2150 rpm. I got right around 24 mpg (we were above 80 for a long stretch) with them on a road trip one time, car was modified as it sits today.

Any reason you do not use 6th?

The difference between 3.90's and 4.10's is so small (100-200 rpm) so IMO just go with the 4.10. You'll be happy.

??

RPM is where the power is for most cammed cars; why would slower RPM increase be a good thing?

4.10s are nice especially with a cam. It helps the car get up into the powerband quicker and doesnt really hurt MPG much. I miss the 9" with 4.10s I had in my SS. Whenever the 10 bolt grenades in my T/A I will be going with an S60 rear with 4.10s

Why an S60 > a 9" if you were pleased w/ the 9"?

the difference was enough for me to change to fine tune my gear. I've had both gear sets in the same car same engine same bolt-ons. Max mph in qtr @ 6800 with the 4.10 was 122. I now trapp 126+with a high of 130 with the 3.90. I could've never got there with 4.10.

Gears really only help from a dig. Why would you want to inhibit acceleration everywhere else?

Trust me op. I'm probably the only one in this thread that has had both gears. If you do go with 4.11/4.10 then look for a set that has 9pinion teeth and 37 ring gear teeth, those are the stronger sets.

Road Atlanta. "High Performance Driver's Education" -- most fun I've ever had in my car. Find your local (closest) road course or track and then search online to see what clubs race there and then inquire on their HPDE track days.

I don't have 4.10's but I have 4.11's in my MWC 9". Before the 9" I had 3.73's in my 10 bolt.
The gear change was noticeable, it runs alittle higher rpm on the highway, but I'm glad i went with 4.11's
