Is there anyone who could fab the torque arm mount looking at the 8.5 housing it sure looks possible. If someone was to start fabing up the torque arm mounts people would buy them like crazy little idea for all those chassis shops out there

You can also use an 8.8 which there are a bunch of builds in this forum since the 8.8 is loaded with a LSD,3.55,3.73 or 4.10s which reduces your build.

When using the 8.5 try to stay away from the newer style they have smaller tapered down axle tubes. The beefier 8.5 can be found in 73-81 f bodies, 83-87 Grand National or the Oldsmobile 442.......

I have an 8.5" 10 bolt that was built in 1982 for my dad's old friend. They put in a 500hp small block on the gas in a brand new 1982 Firebird and were shocked to find out what stock rear it had. They used some axles out of an Olds that are bolt in, narrowed the rear to fit the axles and transfered the shock and spring mounts over. The torque arm mount was cobbled up with some 1/2" plate steel and a crappy welder.

I bought the rear back in 1999 to use in my '88 camaro, as he upgraded to a 9". My dad and I put 3.73s in it, as the 3.08s were noisy. Sold that car but kept the rear.

My dad bought a '96Z in 2007, that he turned into a '57 Chevy, we put the rear in that. He used for a little while, put ls1 brakes on it. Then we backhalved his car and put a 9" in it.

I just bought a '98Z and just installed the 8.5, since the stock rear exploded on the starting line. It is bulletproof for a 500hp car, but not sure if its worth much more.

I want to put 4.30s in it, but would like to use aftermarket axles and spool, since my rear is ancient. Not sure if its worth putting money in, and don't want to jinx it, since its been so reliable.

Depending on what ur using it for a stock 8.5 out of a gn has been run well into the 10s aond lower...with a good set of axles and a good posi or spool into the 8s in 3200 plus cars leaving off a trans break....so is say they're pretty beefy....I have a type with a stage 2 motor that I'm running a 8.5 in with no worries its more set up for roadrace than drag, well for right now....but i have a spare rear end ,it'd be awesome to see someone put one in a fourth gen,cuz I know I'm gwwonna need one in my camaro soon ...LOL. and swapping the ls1 rear brakes is that bad of a job,did it all around on my ttype...
