On the topic of gears, I would love to try my hand at some road courses, does that impact the 3.73 v 4.10 debate at all? I also have an A4 with 3.23.

I just bought a rear with 4.10's in it. I'm coming from 2.73's and I can't wait for the change. I barely take it out on the hwy anymore so I could care less about high rpms or gas mileage. I will be doing a lot of 1/8 mile racing, so I think these will suit me just fine.

I have the setup in my sig, absolutely love the 4.10s and 28" tire with a 4k+ stall. Will be doing 3.90s when I upgrade the rear though as I am on the limiter before the stripe. I recommend 3.90s over the 4.10 as they are much stronger and would be a good improvement over the 3.73s for road course work IMO.

3.23 to 3.73 swap isn't worth much in the way of ET reduction once you have a 3500+ stall. Some of the people responding who have done this swap seem to still have stock stalls, which is entirely different than doing the swap with a 3800 stall already in place. Unless you need a new rear anyway, or are able to do the labor yourself and only pay for the gears, it's not worth the cost IMO. But if you're running out of other things to do and you want every last ounce of ET reduction, or if you don't like the street manners of the 3800 stall and want a "tighter" feel around town, then this could be a good option. Don't expect significant gains though. Even a 2.73 to 3.73 swap isn't worth much in the way of ET reduction with a 3500+ stall already in place.
Yes, top end will be reduced some with the 3.73s, but you'd still be able to hit around 130mph at ~6500 rpm with a stock tire diameter in 3rd gear (much higher if your trans can handle a WOT upshift into OD).
You will lose MPG with the 3.73s though. Not a huge difference, but there will be a loss. Just something else to consider.

I believe my friend picks up 1-1.5 tenths and mph or better from from running 3.73 to 4.10. This is in a mild SB in a 3rd gen w/ shift points arund 6k if that matters. 3400lb car with drivier

I agree with the bolded sentence but once the cam is changed, gear has to be changed to match. When I had the stock cam, the car was a beast off the line with the converter, now with the aftermarket cam, it's very lazy off the line but picked up MPH on the top end. When I had the runs recorded, managed to hear the car just get into 3rd and the traps were only a few feet away as opposed to the stock cam where the car would get into 3rd sooner. So it depends on the setup.
There's a 4.10 10 bolt for sale locally for $250 that I'm thinking about getting but my car is a DD and I also do t want to shift into 4th at the track so I'm hesitant.

I really liked my 3.73's when I had my 10 bolt. Good on the highway and still had good get-up. I'd do the 3.73's for a nice street car. You can really roast the tires with the 4.10's though which is fun and you do notice quicker acceleration. Just not a fun highway car.
