How to break in new gears...A "how-to"
I'm sure many of you know this already, but many do not. Anyway, thought I'd do a simple writeup of breaking in rear gears, so that they'll last as long as possible. This seems like overkill to many, but it does work.
1) Install gears, fill properly (synthetic is fine for break-in of gears).
2) Drive 15 minutes, stop for 10.
3) Drive 30 minutes, stop for 15.
4) Drive for 1 hour, stop for 1 hour.
5) Drive home (less than 100 miles)...let car sit overnight.
6) Drive around gently for about 500 miles additional...change fluid.
7) Enjoy your new gears.
This may seem a bit extensive, but basically your gears are going through a re-hardening process. The cooling breaks let them drop in temperature a bit to allow the grains of the metal to setup properly.
Anyway- if anyone has some additional input, please share. I definately don't know all- but this procedure is pretty widely accepted in the 4x4 world...so basically stole it from my Jeep notebook.

Ditto to the non-synthetic. Moser says, On jack stands 2-3 mins in forward and reverse. Than drive approx. 15 miles with no hard starts etc. Let cool for an hour or two ,and have fun!

crap i drove around for 200 miles, then layed the smackdown on the track. still quiet as a mouse gotta love a good installer.
How long does gear oil last back there. Given 98% city, 1% highway, 1% track, averaging 500 miles per month (track = 100 mile drive).?? should i change it every 6 months?

Odd, I've always been told its fine for breaking in gears.
But to use non-synthetics for breakin when you change posi clutches or install a new posi/locker unit itself.
Was this in the instructions for the whole new moser rear you got? (I see you both have one). If so- my guess is it's for the posi/locker...not the gears themselves, but definately want to find out for sure.

I am currently breakin' my moser 12-bolt right now as we speak, and I have talk to many people and they say that the Eaton posi unit does not like synthetic lube at all. They recommend non synthetic!!!!! I agree with NastySSoo, that is how I broke mine in, It is very hard to drive more than 100 miles let alone 500 miles, going from 3.42's to 4.10's without having fun right off the bat.

The Moser and the Strange will tell you non-synthetic on break in or any for that matter b/c the Eaton Posi's they use do NOT like synthetic. It actually is bad for the Eaton posi's. That is why Moser and Strange say don't use it.
