Default gearing for boosted cars

first off i currently have a 12 bolt with 4.11's in a M6 car with suspension mods and full exhaust

the gears have been fun with this setup but im thinking with the new power i'll be putting down (8psi d1sc) i feel the gears may work against me in the traction battle. just curious to see what everybody else is using

I had 4.10 gears in my Moser 12 bolt back in 2002 when we installed a ProCharger D-1SC. I didn't have a problem with the gears being too big for the added power, although you have to be ready to shift a whole lot faster. You could drop down to 3.73 gears, which would be a good compromise, but I'd wait until you drive it with the blower. Bob

thanks bob i was def planning on driving it first but figured with the extra power that first gear would be next to pointless

4.11s will probably be ok with a 28" tire, but keep in mind the more power you make the less gear you need. The T56 has a pretty aggressive low gear so the extra torque may not accelerate the car or help with traction much. Think of it this way... riding a 10 speed bike all the time in first gear. Once you get moving you are pedaling your *** off but not getting anywhere. If you can spin the engine over 7K then the gear won't hurt, but your suspension will need to be dialed in good, and good tires are a must.

thats why im asking around, i think i'll be able to drop the gearing (nemerically) and hopefully be able to shift less down the track or on roll runs. running to the top of 4th with the mods i have right now i feel like id be shifting 4 times in the 1/4 each one costing me time is there gonna be a big difference from 3.73 to the 4.11

Bob makes a great point. See how you like or dislike the current 4.11's with the boost. If you find you don't have any traction and would like a lower gear, then you can always change.

I am running 3.73's in my boosted car in my sig, and it is perfect for me.

I plan on doing a 5.3 turbo setup in my Formula at some point, and I will go with a 3.23, or possibly even a 2.73 when I do that. I want that based on I want some traction and some top end in 5th gear though. Really, it comes down on what you want, and how you want the car to drive (or how you plan on driving it).

You should be good with the 4.11s. Great overall gear, only issue could be the shifting. Lol

ive been planning my turbo build lately and was thinking of this also. i got 4.10 currently and love it but was wondering how bad it would be in 1st and 2nd gears. but like was mentiond wont hurt to try it 1st then change if need be. dont plan on much track times, just daily driving fun.

If you're not needing to "cross the finish line" at an RPM where the engine is at peak HP, the less gear you have (to a point) the better off you'll be. Go with a 3.50 or even 3.25. You'll love pulling 60 in 1st!

Traction is another thing to consider on a street tire, with a M6 and making boost. My car makes 426whp, I have 3.73's and I'm running 275/35-18 in the rear and first gear is useless under moderate power and second gear spins as well. I think I would have more fun with a deeper gear 3.23 or 3.42 to gain some out of the holeness. But that is just me I suppose.

We'll guys I've put about 400 miles on the car the last few weeks and decided 4.11's are way too much gear lol just took advantage of the brutespeed sale and ordered 3.42's

I'm surprised you didn't like the 4.11's. How much power are you laying down? For me I wouldn't want any less than a 4.10 even at 450 rwhp, but at 550 rwhp on the nitrous it's a bit to much lol

Good choice. Big difference from those 4.11s once you start shifting. Lol

This

If your not racing at the track and need optimal 1/4 numbers then just put 3.50 gears or 3.23's like said above...

I have 3.50's

After reading this post I decided to install some 3.31 gears into my 12 bolt before installing it in my car ,bought it with 3.73 but was going to run all motor with no power adder at the time.
