Default Bad Posi?

Hey guys, so I recently picked up a used 10 bolt from a '99 z28 6 speed (GU8, G80, 3.42 gears & posi) because i'm trying to get rid of my stock 2.73's. Now, when it is turned by hand, both axles DO NOT spin at the same speed. One spins like it should, the other hardly spins. Does this mean the posi is bad? Is it normal? I would like to figure this out before I install the rear end. Any help appreciated.

Thanks for the reply, now i'm familiar that there is both Torsen & Auburn, is Torsen the less desired of the two? If so, why?

The last year Auburns were supplied was 1998,Torsens started with the 1999s'. I don't think either one in more desirable or less desirable. Auburns, because they're a clutch type, wear out and their breakage weak spot is its' spiders. Torsens don't 'wear out' but they have breakages in the cap area that holds the internals together. Either one has good service longevity behind automatics.

A worm wheel cannot turn a worm gear. Take the drive shaft and turn it. Both will spin equal

That makes sense, that's what I was curious about. I was originally worried that maybe the clutches in the one I have were wore out. So then in a Torsen, what would happen if the breakages in the cap break? All the internals would have to be rebuilt & more...?

Thanks for all the info, it's interesting stuff. I'm just excited to get these 2.73's outta there lol

Torsen only break when you're under power and one wheel slips and the little itty bitty worm wheels and worm gears inside turn and try to spin the other and they just break. Usually when a very sticky tire catches HARD on the not spinning side. Other than that you should be fine.

Breakages:for either one, typically the entire unit is replaced. For either one, sometimes broken parts damage the ring & pinion gear set. If you wanna see how a Torsen breaks, search this 'gears and axles' forum for 'catastrophic'.

Okay that's good to know, I think the one I probably have should be okay then. I'll inspect it more. But I just looked that up FirstYrLS1z & i must say that is pretty catastrophic! Thank you both for your help, I believe that answered all of my questions
