Has anyone broken a strange 12 bolt and at what point I just ordered a 12bolt from strange with 35spline axles and spool thanks my car will be 700-800 rwhp max currently 10.00 1/4 car but looking to go low to mid 9s broke the 10bolt a few weeks ago going 1.4 60fts car is an auto foot brake car

Ok but then why do so many people go 9inch and bash the 12bolt?
Only reason I went with the 12bolt was because it was a bit cheaper and to stay Chevy all the way threw the build. But the question I would like to know is the breaking point of the 12 bolt hp wise or 1/4 time wise thank again for quick responses

I think some people avoid them because they still have a tendency to whine and howl. I believe (if I am wrong please feel free to correct me) that there is still an opportunity for the housing to flex on the 12 bolt. That leads to them being noisy. Full disclosure.... I have not had one but that was the feedback I was reading when I was researching buying a rear for my car. It resulted in my decision to buy a S60 thru Carl and CRP. I have run a 9" in the past as well, just never went with the old 12 bolt but it sounds like there are plenty of guys running 12 bolts at that power level without them breaking.

 

A lot of the time (from my readings) it's the posi that fails. Behind an auto I don't think you'll run into any issues whatsoever.

As far as so many guys with the 9 inch. It's just a superior rear end. Easier to service, with fabbed housings they can be the lightest etc.
And it's really easy to bash things that you haven't personally owned or tested. It makes them feel better.

 

The reason I agreed You will be alright is because You are running a spool. If You were planning to run a posi I would have dis-agreed. With a spool typically gear whine is never a concern.

Bottom line when selecting a rear end for any car the heavier duty the housing the better the gear set up stays correct resulting in less noise and longer gear & differential life. One exception is to spend the money for a custom built rear that is capable of reasonably quiet gears and good gear life.

Lots of people run very very fast on Ford 8.8s which is an identical rear end to the 12 bolt. Of course we have torque arm mounts on ours that can cause housing flex but I honestly think the strange casting is the best one. Remember, none of these housings are brand bound anymore. 12 bolts car rear ends were only made for a few years, now they are cast brand new by someone else, and filled with parts from other vendors, now you could get technical and say it was GM designed but that's exactly where it ends.

 

Ok thanks guys yea the car will be pretty much a track car with street use every now and then gear wine don't bother me my 10 bolt had serious wine before it went
