Default Driveshaft Question

Seems like I only have the unique situations

So my 97 LT1 Trans Am HAD a TH400 with a 10 bolt the beginning of this year. So I had a driveshaft made for the TH400 to 10 bolt. Well of course, I found a 12 bolt for a great price, so as I was installing my new rear last night I got to thinking, "Will this driveshaft work with this new rear?" So has anyone else ever been in this situation before? I know all I need to do is measure, but I'd like to know before I start back working on the car again..... I'd hate to spend money twice on the same issue.....

Yes most likely. If I remember correctly the 12 bolt is just a hair longer.

The 10 bolt and 12 bolt typically take the same length driveshaft. Bob

So I attempted to install the shaft the other night and no bueno. With the shaft fully in the tail housing (LMAO) would hit the pinion yoke on the on the 12 bolt with the rear suspension loaded. So I re-measured again and came up with the measurement of 46 9/16" from the tailshaft of the TH400 to the pinion yoke on the 12 bolt.

I actually think it needs to be shortened about an inch. When I measured for the shaft for the 10 bolt, I was almost at 48", so it'll be a little over an inch difference.

So the end story of this phase is the measurement of the DS LT1/TH400 to 10 bolt is roughly 48" and the DS LT1/TH400 to Moser 12 bolt is 46 9/16". I think, lol.....

From the measurements I have gotten from various customers with a th400 and 10bolts compared to our measurements for a th400 there is only about a 1/4'' in difference.

What trans slip yoke do you have?

I have two slip yokes for my TH400. A sonnax chromoly forged, and a Spicer.

The sonnax is more compacted, shorter distance from center of u-joint to the beginning of the spline. It is also splined further back closer to the u-joint than the Spicer yoke is.

What im saying is the Sonnax slip yoke will possibly give you more room if your driveshaft is too long.

Obviously I can't guarantee it will work. You still need to take a measurement.

Have you checked out Mark Williams Website? They sell a 1" shorter Pinion Yoke for 12-Bolts.
