Default Stall or gear swap first? For a DD.....opinions welcome

I have a set of 3.42 motive gears laying around but Im liking the idea of a stall first. Ill be doing both at some point.

Im considering a cam install within the next 3-5 months (after I install either the gears or stall). Im looking at a 4000 Circle D or Yank Converter for my Automatic. 99 Camaro

Also, my rear differential cover is looking a little ratty (but not leaking). Should I consider a new cover while Im in there with gears? If so, which one? It's a 10 bolt

Looking at your past posts, you put a post looking for a used convertor. Not recommended,no telling what kind/how much crap is in it,no matter what the 'seller' says. Enough crap could take out the tranny. You take your chances with a used one.
A cam would benefit from a 3600-4000 stall,AND a good one from Yank,CircleD,or equivalent.
Stall first !!!
What are your rear gears,2.73(GU2) or 3.23(GU5) ? A car with 2.73s' would benefit from a change to 3.42s',a car with 3.23s' don't waste the effort/time/expense to change to 3.42s'. 3.23s' changed to 3.73s' would be a worthwhile change but after driving with a good stall, you'd probably disregard a gear change.
If the cover is not leaking, why bother to touch it. How many miles on the car ?

I have 2.73s now . Car has 122k miles .

yeah , I'll pass on a used converter . I'm sticking with a higher quality one .

do a convertor(and an aftermarket tranny fluid cooler),drive it for a while, you might not want to change gears.
Reason I asked about the mileage is how long since the rear got a fluid change.

3.73s would wake that car up! But it would be actually faster with a good converter.

I wouldn't even think of gears prior to doing a stall swap on a 4L60E/LS1 application. Ever. DD, weekend toy, track mule, doesn't matter IMO.

The above posts by FirstYrLS1Z contain excellent advice, I'd recommend following it.

Although I agree with all of the above....If you already have the 3.42's, do both (why wouldn't ya) seat of the pants will pick up over the 2.73's.

Yep, if you've got 'em use 'em. I decided on the first test drive of my car (with 2.73's) that I was going to do gears (wasn't familiar with the world of LS1 & stalls just yet). Thus I did the the 3.42s and never looked back. Huge increase in responsiveness.

I did gears first and it felt a little better. Then I did a converter and wow, I really should have done that first.

I did the 3.42's first and liked it, then a 278 Circle D 3200 and love it. I would do the gears first, then a good converter which you will want to do. Tune it one time and your good to go. Just my opinion.

Definitely do the converter first, especially if money only allows for one. You may discover that the gears are totally unnecessary for you at that point (saving you some install cash.) If it feels a bit too loose for your taste, you can always do the gears later.

While the gear swap definitely has merit the more you hang around here the more you see that NO gear swap has the type of impact on ET that a good convertor has.

i was wondering this....do you need a tune for a stall?

I need a new tune right now from all the bolt ons but figured Id wait until the gears or stall upgrade

If by "need" you mean "required", then the answer is both yes and no (depending on stall size and model year.)

Here's a good recent thread where this was touched on near the end:
