stock rear end question? leaking?
Hi,
I Recently changed my diff fluid on my 2000 ws6, it is currently parked for the winter, but before changing it i noticed it was leaking fluid slowly and around the diff was moist. even after changing the seal, it is still leaking, even more than before. it is still a slow leak but its dripping from the bottom off the cover, not sure why its still happening?
could i have overtightened the bolts?
or could it be my cover? i cleaned it to the best that i could with brake cleaner before putting it back on.
if it is my cover, does anyone have any knowledge or opinion on the LPW diff cover? is it worth it?
any advice is appreciated.
thanks

Get a new gasket, clean the case and the cover really good, apply a thin layer of ultra black on both sides of the gasket, torque to spec, retorque after an hour.

I've always used two GM gsks and nothing else and I never have had a leak. But you have to pound out the dimples where the holes are because they bend your cover and then put the two gsks on and I have never had a leak from the cover. If you have any gasket sealer in your bolt holes then you won't be able to tight the bolts because it stops you from tightening the bolt all of the way. So make sure you don't have any sealer in your bolt holes. Use a under size drill bit to clean out the hole if you do. Don't strip out your threads with to big of a drill bit. I seen this happen to people that used sealer on the cover and then the bolt can't tighten all the way. That is why I use two gaskets from GM because they are the thickest that I have found and I use them both because of the uneven surface of the cover and I have never had a leak.
