You were told wrong. There is no specific gear requirement for any particular transmission; purpose and overall combo will determine best gearing.
Having said that, if you have a TH350 now then the current 1st gear ratio is numerically lower than what you'll have with a 200-4R - so you'll already have a more aggressive launch with the 200 even if you don't change anything with the rear gear at all.

The 2004r is very similar to a 350 but has lock up and OD which is a big plus.. No matter what tranny you decide to use put the largest cooler on it you can find. I used my AC condenser after having it boiled out since that car had no AC it looked factory, great position and worked flawlessly.
