I'm putting 4.10 Ford Racing Gears in an 8.8 for my TA. I thought the pinion looked too deep with .027 so I started going down but the pattern wasn't turning out how I hoped. All readings were taken with .006-.009 backlash. Any help is appreciated.
You are going in the right direction, the 0.015 pics look the best, and not all that bad IMO. I think a little further, like 0.012-0.013 might be spot-on. If it looks worse, back off to 0.014. Then pick the shim stack that gives the best pattern between those.
Are these two cut (face hobbed) gears? The drive side is not good at all. It should be centered between the heel and toe. What brand marking compound are you using?
I don't know how to tell if they are 5 cut or 2 cut but backlash specs are .008-.012 so that leads me to believe they are 2 cut. I'm using a Yukon rebuild kit that had the marking compound included. I would love for the drive side to move down but no matter the shim it stays at the top.
Definitely figure out what gears you have first as they both produce different patterns. If the teeth are the same depth at the heel and toe, then they are two cut. Check out this article. It has a lot of good info along with how to tell the difference between the two types of gears. I am actually in the process of setting up a two cut set and thought this was valuable. I will also toss up a link to another page that I have been referencing (it only applies to two cut gears, though).

You sure? Five cut gears have a gradual change in depth from heel to toe. That chopped off corner on the toe side that you have is not what indicates a five cut gear. The site I linked to above said that all new Ford Racing gears are two cut. If you are unsure, measure the depth of the teeth or call Ford and ask them.
