Contact pattern check GM 8.5 10 bolt (circa '79)
swapped in a series 3 carrier with a set of US Gear 3.55 (01-885355) and new all new bearings
US Gear calls for a backlash of 8-12 thou
original pinion spacer .039" put me right at the pinion depth of 2.591" (wasn't that convenient)
first set is with the Pinion spacer at .039" and a backlash of .009"

It looks to me like the .039" pinion shim is a winner, but both sides still run a bit biased toward the toe, especially the coast. I'm thinking I should shim the carrier for a .010" backlash with the .039" pinion shim and send it. Anyone with experience doing this think I should do something different?
Agree with your post #5, .039 looks best and agree with the .010 and run it. Both the .009 and .011 have nice wide contact areas for the drive side. The drive side for me is more important as it would see higher torque from powertrain and since you're changing gear set for better acceleration ( I assume), the largest contact pattern (area) would provide least wear.
For me I rather have least amount of wear and slight noise vs no noise and a gear set that'll wear out prematurely.
Follow recommended break-in procedure and then sometime in the future do a drain/inspection to look at the resulting established 'shiny' pattern.
Bigger enlargeable pictures would have been better for evaluating.
