Default 4.56 gears ?

Hey guys I recently sold my 98 ws6 A4 and claimed a 2002 ws6 6 speed it took a little work as it sat for about 2 years before I got it but I’m finally getting it where I want it and I’ve been reading all the forums I can possibly read on here about 4:56 rear end gears but most guys are taking there cars to the track with cams and other bolt ons and I am not but I’m really liking what I’ve read about them so far I’m not to worried about top end speed losses I just want to hear what someone has to say about them for a stock/street or weekend car I want the car to be explosive coming off the line and have plenty of pull in the lower gears. I also plan on getting a tru track locker with them thanks for any info

Don't waste your money on the stock 7.5" 10-bolt rear. Too easy to break w/ the stock 3.42s, it'll be twice as easy w/ 4.56s. Most M6 owners go w/ 4.10s, anything steeper makes 1st gear worthless and you're foot will never reach the floor without spinning street tires (if you are planning sticky drag radials, all the more reason to replace your rear with something stouter.). I went w/ 3.73s in my S60 and I've never hit the rev-limiter in 1st so often as I do now.

^^^, don't do 4.56s'. The 3.42s' are on borrowed time as it is.
If you still had the 98 A4, then yes.

My a4 had 4:10s in it and I had a ton of people telling me that it was to much for a 4 speed but personally I thought it was perfect after the 4:10s and yeah I’m not saying it’s gonna Be done in the stock 10 bolt housing just asking about the gears in general right now

I have a 6.0 ms4 car with a 80e and 4.10s werent enough. i ended up with 4.56's since the 80 has very long gearing. being a 6 speed i wouldnt go any higher than 4.10's.

and most def want to get rid of that trashy 10 bolt. bigger ring and pinion will def shorten the life span. i had 4.10's in the 10 bolt before i bought my 12 bolt and it howled something fierce after 500 miles of whooping its ***

NO, I'm not saying I would recommend 4.56s' for the auto. 4.56s' are the highest numerical ratio available for our little 7.5/7.625" 10 bolt. 3.73s' are the typical/popular gear swap for the A4s'. Some are even starting to use 4.10s'. Just because I'm running 4.56s' w/A4 in the little 10 bolt, it's not something I'm recommending, if there was confusion in my post, I'm sorry.
But I do love my 4.56s'. Also happen to have in it a Yank SS3600. !st & 2nd gear are absolutely wicked (with traction). Shock many 425hp Mustangs, Camaros, & Challengers on the street.
RPMs are 2500 @ 60mph & 3000 @ 72mph. Has been on 4 trips to Florida from Cleveland Ohio with the 4.56s'. On identical trips with the OEM 3.23s' mpg was 24.5, 4.56s gave 21.5, the computer handles the mpg well.

4.10 is just a good all around gear and so is the 3.73 when we're talking street cars. With the 4.10's in a manual car it's somewhere around 80mph at 2K rpms and my best MPG so far has been 17.4 with the a/c on.
