GM 10 bolt 8.5

GM 10 bolt 8.5
I have found a very good deal on a 60s 10 bolt 8.5 inch Camaro rear end, with all the upgrades and just need gears. If Im correct those are a 60 inch width and would fit an 96 F body. Im just wondering if anyone has done this upgrade from the 7.5 inch 10 bolt rear end that comes stock in the Fbody, and has made brackets work and which brackets they used and so forth. Car is around 450 to 500 wheel horsepower and will be staying there. So it should definitely hold the power more then enough. Again reason being of choosing this, I dont need a rear end that will hold 1000 hp, to do the 8.8 or 9 inch will cost me a fair more than this already built, new, 8.5 rear. Thanks.

You said a "60's 10-bolt"...I don't think that's an 8.5". I seem to recall that the 8.5" was introduced in 1971 or '72 at the earliest. A '60s (1st gen) Camaro wouldn't have come with this rear originally. The 8.2" 10-bolt is what you might be looking at here. I would double check just exactly what this rear is before moving forward with any plans.

Second gen Camaro is a 8.5 which is a good rear end but 4th gen Camaro are torque arm and 2nd gen are leaf spring so you would need to cut all the brackets off and have new ones made and welded on for the shocks, lower control arms and torque arm. Im not sure the effort would be worth it.

Those 8.5s have cast iron housings. Welding to cast iron is major PITA and not worth the time and effort so any torque arm mount that you come up with will need to bolt to the existing rear cover holes or weld to the axle tubes somehow. Its been done both ways. Assuming you want to keep the factory style suspension, you will also need to use your old shock/spring/control arm brackets or make/buy them and weld them to the 8.5 tubes. You will have to use the 2nd gen Camaro brakes or make a custom bracket for your calipers. The wheel backspacing will be different as well, probably around a 4.5" backspacing on a 8" wide rim. Your driveshaft will need to be shortened about an inch too. After all that trouble you still have 28 spline axles and c-clips.
