How far can you shorten the axles on a 12 bolt?

How far can you shorten the axles on a 12 bolt? I found a 12 bolt Moser housing I am looking to buy but the axle tubes are shortened by 4". I am not sure if thats total or 4" each side. BUT, if they are 4" each side, I should be able to run a 15x10" Draglite with a 3.5" backspacing and be alright shouldn't I? Thanks

I believe that you will loose the ability to remount your ebrake at 3". You would probrably have to relocate the LCAs too if you went much more than 3", not sure though.
