daily driven auto= 12 or 9? spool???
my marine buddy has a manual
i have an auto
he drove my car with a light foot at first
he commented how little power it has
(he has a 6cyl firebird)
so he decided to floor it around a 90º left
now i need a new differential.
i was thinking 12bolt w/ "posi"
but this man with a red neck told me
go to the junkyard and find a 9"
put a spool in it with at least 4.11's
i told him i only have four gears
he said he only has three
and he has 4.56's with a spool.
what should i do?
i plan to make 420-600rwhp eventually
his car jerks and chirps around corners in third gear.

i say low 400s to 600s
because i dont know if i will spray or not
if i do not,
then low 400s cam or maybe heads as well..
but maybe i might spray a little on it,
which i have seen others achieve approx 600rwhp
to be honest, i am thinking saving my pennies for the G5x3,
and if i am not satisfied, then a 150hp shot on it
and this is my daily.
so..
no to a spool?
but.. posi is more expensive..
and.. doesnt it break?

You will have to modify a rear end out of another car to fit in yours. Some people use spools on the street but not many. I would not put 410's into an auto if it was me.

I would agree with most of the others on here. I would not run a spool on a daily driver and since you have an auto, I would think a Strange 12 bolt with the good posi and 3.73's would be a good choice. The 12 bolts have gotten a bad rap for breaking the spider gears in the posi units, but that is usually with a M6 leaving on slicks. I chose to go with the 9" and a locker since I have a manual, but with an auto I suspect the 12 bolt would last forever. Also the 12 bolt is lighter (not sure how much since that has been debated) and is also more effeceint (your car will make more RWHP with the 12 bolt over a 9").

ive been getting more and more tired
of the saggy throttle and high freeway rpms
and the benefit from high stall? the launch?
doesnt happen on the street.
i might change to m6.
that, with a g5x3 and all the bolt ons
is asking for trouble.
if i just stay off the track
then should i be okay with just a 12-bolt and posi?
i heard the 10-bolts break even on the street with a hard 1-2 shift.

Did you retain the lock up clutch on your converter? If so, the rpms should not be any higher on the freeway once it locks up than it was with the stock converter. If it is perhaps there is either something wrong with the converter, tranny, or computer that is not getting the converter locked.

but only four gears.
with 3.73, i am doing 80mph at ~3000rpm
with six gears,
i could get 4.11 and still have decent freeway rpm.

they sent his broke *** to somewhere in the middle east.
i let him drive the car because he drives for the marines.
being that he has "professional military training"..
i thought..
you know the rest
i tried to take the diff from his 96 6cyl fireturd
but it looked like the torque arm is different..
anyone know if it is compatible?
ill take it!

I can answer your question about the spool on a daily driver next thuesday because i going to put a 33 spline spool in my 12 bolt.
I both a 12 bolt used eaton posi but it act weird from the first day i used it.Now if i going to rebuild it i have to be with out my car maybe a few weeks because i have to check what is bad or broken and rent a car those days.So insted of rent a car and loose the cash i deside to buy an spool. Now if i can live with it fine if not i repair the posi with my car running.

wtf is tru-trac?
isnt that fords version of positraction?
why would i chose that?
tell me some details about it.
btw, this old man with a big red craterey nose and bushy eyebrows told me that back in the old days they used this cable lock thing where the diff functions as a limited slip, but when you pull this cable, the diff locks.
anyone heard of that?
fastsspr.. tell me how it goes!
the old man says if i can tolerate a 4000 stall daily,
i can handle a spool.
tell me!

what?! regular radial tires?!!
what happens when the **** kicks off?
what happens when im in lane two of three
and i get a EVO on my left and an STI on the right?
whats the use of getting this 4000 stall AWD stomper
when i have to use regular radials?
as it is, i want to change from drag radials to ET streets (but wont)
im hearing this too often, so maybe a spool is out of question for a daily w/ drag radials. fastsspr, do you use drag radials with your spool?

A tru-trac is the same design as a torsen. They are torque sensing diffs that work off of applied torque. Very good design for road racing and such, and has the driveability of a open rear. Not as strong as a good clutch posi or locker, but the car drives almost like it isnt there. The pre-loaded versions drive like a regular posi, and there are larger, stronger versions available that are pretty durable.
