Default Richmond gears, any good?

I can get 3.73 new richmond gear w/ install kit for only $250. I was just wondering if richmond gears were any good because I was going to save up and get motive's but this seems like a great deal to me.

I went through gear swap hell.

Trashed 5 sets of Motives in 7 weeks, yes, no typo here. Went with Richmonds and it lasted 4 years. I then sold my stock rear with them in it.

BTW Richmaonds can be louder because they are cut for strength and have a high nickel content (so I was told).

But my installer was dead nuts on the depth and backlash, resulting in a quieter than stock rear for those 4 years.

Noise doesn't concern me in anyway. I just want to know if they are good and will last as these will be going into my stock 10bolt.

That doesn't seem like that great of a deal. Last I looked, you could get new motives and motive master install kit for less than that from our sponsor New Era Performance Parts ---->

ehhh only a $20 difference and from what I have been reading, richmond is infact stronger/solid gears compared to motive.

Well you specifically said you were saving for Motives.

I think if you do much more research, you'll find out that they are heavily preferred to Richmond. I spent much time looking up information on this from various sites, and the consensus I found was that GM and Motives were heavily favored; especially compared to Richmond.

My personal experience contradicts this, but I think you are right. The Richies get a bad rap for being louder, not weaker.

as long as the product is quality, and strong and not flimsy. The motives are supposively a lot weaker and thinner compared to the richmond.

Edit: but I am going to ask a real noob question. How will the gears be louder? What kind of sound am I going to hear and when will I hear it?

Some whine at speeds 45-70 mph in 5th and 6th gears especially. It won't be bad if they are set up perfectly. Mine was!

Oh ok, I don't care about that because I have my system blasting 90% of the time anyways.

They'll whine; as I've seen described, "like a banshee". Richmond are reported as being particularly bad in this aspect, and particularly loud.

It will be something that you think you can handle at first for the traded amount of strength (the amount is negotiable and perhaps negligible) you will gain over other gears. My advice? Do a lot of searches. There is a lot of this kind of stuff about gear whine, particularly Richmond. Then do some searches about Motive and GM gears just to give yourself a comparison. After doing a lot of searching I arrived at a conclusion of getting Motives...and yes I did consider Richmond even though they have reported problems of whine and difficulty in setting up.

I have decided to go with Motive gears. You can also get a good deal at www.jawsgear.com.

So you think the noise will be really reallly loud? Can anyone with richmond 3.73 gears chime in? If the noise is really that bad then I'll go with motive.

I had 2 sets of Richmond gears in my GTA. The first set was installed incorrectly and whined like crazy. The second set I installed with a friend of mine. There was a slight bit of whine between 30 to 40 mph. If you were talking with someone in the car you couldn't hear it.

Set up is more crucial to whine than anything else. My Richmond 4.10s in the stock 10 bolt were the quietest gears I ever *didn't* hear! It lasted ~4 years, and when the guy who bought my 10 bolt found out I had Richmond 4.10s in it he was and in total disbelief.

My Strange 12 bolt whines like a ****** now, 'not sure what 4.10 gears are in it.

Set up, set up, set up....

Agree 100%... I have installed 3 sets of Richmonds (none in a 7.5" rear axle though), and none of them have been noisy. The 3.73's I put in my 89 Suburban are quieter than my stock 3.42's in my 91 Suburban. And the 4.56's I had in my GM 12 bolt in my 77 were quieter than my 3.42's in the 2000 T/A after 30000 miles.

I got the 3.73's richmond of course and i love them. A little noise at about 65-70 bu nothing that ur exhaust or stereo wont cover. its more of a whur sound. Nothing bad. I had my mechanic put them in cause he used to drag and he said the he recomended richmonds cause he went thru other gears quikly and that the richmonds lasted the longest.
