ive never been underneath my car but....
what prevents us from moving the suspension inwards and tubbing out the rear wheels to get some wider tires back there? im assuming that the gas tank is in the middle too?

IMO there's no reason to go to that expense with today's tire technology. A set of ET Drags/ Hoosier slicks have already propelled our car to 1.3x-1.4x 60's and I think there's a ton more left as a couple people get more hardcore <img src="images/icons/wink.gif" border="0"> <img src="images/icons/grin.gif" border="0">

I depends how wide a tire you want. A 28x10.50w can be made to fit with trimming/beating but no tubbing. How much tire do you need? If you tub it there is more than enough room (before you hit subframes, etc) to fit a 14" wide tire, but that's just going to slow you down
(to answer your question that's probably who not many/no one has done it - since (as Bob2of3 points out) it's not needed).
If you can't hook with a 28x10.50w you need to work on the rest of your suspension anyway <img src="images/icons/smile.gif" border="0">
