check out your RPO codes on the drivers-side door, might have to look up a listing somewhere of what all the codes mean. you can also jack the car up, rotate the tire one time, and count how many times the pinion spins.
example) tire spins once and pinion spins ALMOST 3 times... its a 2.73
example) tire spins once, and pinion spins a little more than 3 times... its a 3.23
i think all the SS cars have a 3.23, but i'm not for positive.

Also F-bodies did come with 3.08's. Ur right LS1's didn't but in the V6 camaro's it was an option just like the 3.23's and 2.73's were for the V8's. 3.08's i think were for the M5's.

Your right it didnt depend on the tire rating-the tire rating depended on the gear
