Tranny drain plug
I looked at the B&M cast aluminum deep dish pan but it's $160+ and a DIY drain plug is only $6.
I've got better things to spend my money on right now.
Can't you switch to the S-10 transmission pan for a cheap deep pan alternative?
(caveat: I am not an a4 guy, but I seem to remember this factoid).

Hmmm, haven't heard this. You think the dealership might know? Err...wait, does the S-10 pan have a drain plug? That's what I need. I just thought I would look at the deep dish while I was it.
If not then cheap and easy it is. I just don't want to screw the stock pan up and HAVE to replace it.
Chris
Preferably from someone who has done just this very thing and has ALREADY gone through the trouble of finding the right spot.
Yes the deep dish has a drain plug but the one I would want is $165. Money I would rather spend elsewhere right now.
NO, I don't plan on leaving my filter on forever but if I had a drain plug I could (1) Drain my fluid more often without changing the filter if I so choose and...(2) Drain the majority of the fluid the EASY/NEAT way before dropping the pan.
NO, I am not yet an absolute complete idiot. I would take the pan off before drilling a hole in it but as I mentioned above, I'd like to take the pan off, drill the hole, install the plug and be done with it and not fiddle fart away my afternoon.
Besides, since these things usually occur on the weekend...it's been my experience that you're usually S.O.L. if you have questions or need advice from any of the boards at anytime on the weekend.[/tantrum]
Breathe...so can anyone tell me where they've mounted a drain plug on their stock tranny pan.
Thank you!

Now does someone know for sure where to mount this thing?

I have one welded dead center about 3-4 inches from the rear of the pan. You want to see a picture?

Pretty please!
I then put a Y2K Silverado 4L60E drain pan on the car - it has a plug from the factory, and is about 1/2" deeper than stock across 3/4 of the pan. It fits like stock, looks like stock, and cost about $50-$60 for the pan plus filter (it's a deep filter, specific for the pan).
I may have put my drain plug in the wrong place. Once you get the pan off, you should be able to look inside the trans to make sure that wherever you put the plug, it won't come in contact with any parts of the trans. Either that, or get the Y2K Silverado pan. I like the new one.
I've got GM part numbers at home somewhere...

I put a Summit bolt-in drain plug in my 94Z 4L60E. I had problems with it leaking (very small drips). I even put JB Weld around it, but eventually it leaked past that.

Hey, that truck pan sounds like a good idea. I might could get it even cheaper through one of the online GM vendors + it comes with a filter.
I need to check out the S-10 pan also like ChrisB mentioned.
Thanks for the info!

The dealers said that this should include the gasket but not the filter.
I believe I paid somewhere around $35 for the pan, $16 for the filter, and add shipping, and it came to between 50-60 bucks. I got it from Dal when he was still at Lambert (a while back ).
It's well worth it. Makes changing the fluid a snap. The only thing to watch - the factory puts that drain plug bolt in TIGHT. I had to hit it with an impact to loosen.

I just looked at it again and is dead center 2 inches from the rear of the pan. It's welded by my trannie guy so it doesn't leak at all. If I can get under the car tomorrow, I will take a picture. If I don't you have to keep reminding me by e-mail.

Thanks Leo. Don't worry about it. I think I'm gonna get the deep dish pan from the truck tranny. It's a 6 qt and comes with a plug. I can get the new pan, filter, and gasket for about $50.
Besides after all that turkey, I'd hate for ya to get stuck under your car. Happy Thanksgiving guys and God bless!
