I usually put a drop or two on the back of the gasket just to hold it in place while I put the cover back on! But I never put silicone all the way around the gasket cause it is not needed!

the bearing looked pretty great, but the problem was where on the axle the bearing sat!! here:

luckily i found a spare axle from a friend in town today, got it all sewn together and the problem is 100% solved!! thanks for all the help!

my only question regards the block you slide out of the diff. to get the c-clips out. when i put the block back IN the diff. i forgot which way i took it out (i actually never looked because i didn't realize it had to go in a certain way from the start). when i put it back in, it went in fine, but i don't know if it was necessarily right (i could have turned it 180 degrees and that would have been the only other option). the problem is that i believe that 8mm bolt holding the block in place would tighten down the block regardless of which way it went in.

so what would that mean if i put it in the wrong way? i drove it around and didn't notice anything weird, so i don't think there should be any problems...

one other thing...

at the end of the axle (the end inside the differential), there is a lip, and past that lip there is the area for the c-clip to fit. i'm wondering if the c-clip can fit on the lip? not that i think i did that, but i'm just being paranoid. i remember having to turn my head to stick the c-clip in, and when i go it in, it looked as if it was in the groove, and so i called it good to go.

assuming i either didn't do the c-clip right or the spacer block right, i probably would have known that by now, huh (by having an axle go loose...but it wouldn't have gone too far since the brake caliper also holds the axle down, or would i still have known?)? i really think i did both things right, but i hate second guessing myself (and i do it a lot!) and i like to find all possible outcomes so that i can rule out anything bad.

Man that axle was eat up hope ya replaced it! HA HA! The block should work either way and the c clip just slides on the end of the axle and slides up into the carrier gears! if ya done drove it should be fine if ya real concerend about it take the wheel back off and you caliper had give a good ****** on the axle and if it dosen't come out.Put it back together and drive it till the wheels fall off!Figurativly speaking!

i watched the axle go back out once the c-clip was on, i just couldn't tell which part of the axle the c-clip was sitting on. but i guess it would have had to be in the grove for me to pull it back (otherwise c-clip would have fallen off again). i think i'm being ridiculously paranoid right now...

Default Similar or same problem

In my 98 Z28 when I go around corners (getin on the gas) the rear end makes a really loud noise and the car vibrates. Also when im driving in a strait line at low speeds (not getin on the gas) the rear end makes a noise. On top of all this my drivers side rear tire is bald while the passenger side tire has around 20% tread left on it. Does anyone have a clue to what is wrong with it?
