If I was a 90% street driver, I would put the front swaybar back on and take off the front skinnies. !front swaybar + skinnies really makes the locking action noticeable. I call it the twitch. Add a tall sidewall slick at 25 psi the car becomes even more sloppy. Dan from Speed Inc. drove my car recently and referred to it as something like "red, fast and dangerous."

My locker has seen three different gears, and about 300 passes. It's doing great. I may end up selling the whole rearend at some point and getting a 35 or 40 spline one since I make almost 800rwhp.

I just got my 9" installed today with 31 spline soft locker, I love it allready!
I was worried the ride would be real harsh but the rear end feels very solid and tight. When I take a tight corner the wheels jerk a little but its kind of cool. it really drives a lot better than I was expecting. I cant wait to break the gears in and get on it

Soft spring or stiff spring, they are Detroit Lockers.
Anybody that drove 60's Ford muscle cars will tell you they are noticable but needed if you want both tires to turn EVERY time you launch. On the street just know it's there, keep rear tire air pressures equal and enjoy the clicking!

I'm trying to decide, too: soft locker or tru-track posi in a 9". This is a M6 car, turbo install is imminent and I expect to be around 550 rwhp. Let's say the car will see "occasional" track time.

For the guys running the soft locker (I assume they're all 31 spline?) can you give me a sense of exactly what normal street driving is like? You know, I'm at the stoplight on an uphill and I make a right turn... is my car going to lurch and clunk (be more prone to stalling?) or am I just going to hear a mild clicking sound from the rear? Or I'm parallel parking...

Just trying to get a sense of whether the quirks for the soft locker are mainly generating mild noise or actually making the car difficult to manuever.

Thanks in advance for your input,

Rich

Rich, I run the Soft Locker every day. It is nothing but a noise. The only time that it because something other than that is if you take a tight turn at low speeds. Just gotta learn to drive it the correct way which will not take long at all. Just get the locker because the simple reliability of it is worth the noise easily.

Thanks for the info. Absolutely no smartass intended, but how do I "drive it the correct way"?

Any hints? Also curious if the TruTrack posi is popular right now just because it's a newer flavor... or is it really significantly better than the other posi units?

like psj said, locker and no front sway can get interesting

car in corners is very picky when it comes to how you accelerate or better yet dont through corners

best word to describe the car when turning is very twitchy

I have a 35 spline locker... Once you learn how to drive it it's not that bad. Trust me you will know when you aren't driving it right, cause it will jump and pop like crazy.

Things I've learned from driving mine. In tight turns push the clutch in and coast. For a normal turn either coast through it or use enough gas to keep it locked and it won't lurch sideways. On entrance and exit ramps my car can still hold a pretty good amount of speed (still has front sway bar and wide tires) but you can tell that one tire is spinning a little bit cause it's still locked, but you have to use the gas just right in these type turns or it will start jumping sideways and come out from under you. In the rain, well you pretty much have a spool.

Lockers are really fun when you wanna get stupid though. You can power slide so easily and it's so much easier to control it w/ both tires locked together, I don't have to fight the wheel like a used to.

I've got the soft locker, definitely not an easy drive like the posi, but not unbearable. It's worth putting up with in the long run, because when you get to the track and rev to 4,000 rpm with MT DR's and dump the clutch, you're not worried about it breaking. A 12 bolt is fine for an auto but forget it for an M6. Here's a picture of my rear. https://ls1tech.com/forums/attachmen...chmentid=24306

LOL! This is true, one of the guys @ my gym heard it pop once and asked me if my rear end was tearing up. I get so many weird and nasty looks when that happens, I love making it pop on purpose just to see peoples reaction.

The Trac Tech True Trac is not the same as a Detroit soft locker, when the locker is engaged it is just like a spool, not true with the Trac Tech. Go to the Detroit Locker web site, it will explain how things work. www.tractech.com.
