Default 9" with soft locker

I am thinking of going this route. I really didnt want to do a locker or spool and I wanted to keep POSI, but from what I have read I think I need the 9" with soft locker.

I have a 408 M6 car with possible 150-200 shot.

I was considering a Strange 12bolt Posi, but I am not sure now.

Car will maybe see 3 passes a month if that at the track. Is it worth the locker? How is the soft locker compared to a locker or compared to a POSI?

I dont think I need to dump it at 5500 or 6000rpm, so maybe the 12bolt will hold up??????

What do you all think? Keep in mind this is a daily driver with very little track time...

Question

A little off your topic, but what is a soft locker & how is it different from a locker?

They work the same way. The soft locker is just not as loud and I think you can only get it in 31 spline. They're fun to drive on the street

Im sure it is like driving around my truck with a power trax locker, the second you hit the gas it will lock together. The only time that locker will unlock is if you are running it gently through a parking lot or something. My buddies jeep wrangler has a dana 60 in it with detriot soft locker. It is pretty much a queit locker. It will just take some getting used to. Thats the rout i think im going.

It's all in the way you drive the car.....If you can carry some speed in the turns and stay off the gas you'll never know it's there. Avoid hard right hand turns at low speed. Be ready if you let off the gas in a long turn the car will jump alittle sideways when it unlocks. All it takes is seat time and you'll forget it's there. I love mine....Makes me feel more like I'm in nascar

There's a few different spring rates that are avalible for a detroit.. changing these springs will give a different feel .. In some circle track applications these can help handling of the car... Im supprised no one has tryed an air locker in an Fbody

I have:
31 spline 9"
Tractech soft locker
!front swaybar

My car can be a handful to drive like a normal car. With !front swaybar the car can really... looking for the right term... Jump around.

If I screw around I keep the wheel dead straight.

If you rarely go to the track I would get a posi.

Thanks PSJ, yeah after considering everything I think I am going to go with a Strange 12bolt loaded. I just wont dump the clutch at anything over 4500 for the very few times that i do take it to the track.

Any1 have anything good to say about Moser?

I'm about to order a 35 spline (not soft) locker Moser 9" after bending an axle in my 10 bolt. I figure if its gonna make any noise at all I might as well buy the strongest my money will get me.

Moser makes good products just shotty set ups. Get Moser parts and have a good gear person set it up, you wont be dissappointed.

I have been looking into the Trac Tech Tru-Trac posi. Looks like a pretty stout peice.

So does a soft locker have different springs in it or is a different mfgr? I'm still confused. BTW my Detroit Locker is a noisy, popping, car lurching SOB but I'm confident it's more reliable than the Eaton posi I had before.

No problem, It's hard to find anything on a soft locker. Let me know if you need anything else.

Interesting thread. I've been looking into a 9 inch with a soft locker for awhile now. I don't go to the track at all now, and I will probably only go occassionally after I get my car completely setup with the new rearend (I'm too afraid of breaking it right now). I still think I want to go soft locker though. If I'm going to spend $2500 on a rearend, I want something that won't break. The posi is the weak link, so IMO, it's not worth the money if it might break. The locker is going to be TOUGH to break. I probably won't get the rearend until I get heads/cam though, so hopefully, some of you guys will buy soft lockers and let me know what it is like.
