Default Moser 1310 yoke+OEM steel DS...Which u-joint?

Did a search on both sites and can't find a good answer for this. I saw a post or two that suggested a Precision 372. I just tried that and its a little too big.

Does anyone know for sure?

Yup, that's how mine looks too.

Before someone asks, yes, I do have a steel DS. I twisted my aluminum DS in half when my rear end locked up, and someone gave me a steel DS off an A4 LS1 Camaro for free.

Angie at Thunder thought I might need to get a Spicer 1310 to 1330 conversion u-joint?

Next question: Someone else mentioned that a Precision 355 u-joint should work. I exchanged the 372 for a 355. On the u-joint, one "side" has grooves around it and one "side" is smooth. I assume it matters which side you mate to the DS and which side you mate to the yoke? The smooth side fits in the yoke nicely, and the side with the grooves will fit the DS. However, I thought the side with the grooves was supposed to go in the yoke. If that's the case, the 355 won't work either, because the side with the grooves is a little to big to fit in the yoke, and the smooth side is a little too small for the DS (it appears).

Anyone know?

OK, I've finally got all the dimensions.

The u-joint endcaps that go into the yoke are 1.063 in diameter, and 3.218 (3 7/32") end to end, and use outside locks (ie, no grooves in the sides of the endcaps). This is because the Dana series 1310 yoke has tabs that hold the endcaps in place.

The u-joint endcaps that go into the driveshaft are 1.125 in diameter, 3.5" end to end, and use outside locks (has grooves).

I was confused, because the stock yoke requires outside locks on the endcaps that mate with it. Because of this, when I tried the Precision 372, I thought the side with the outside locks was the side that needed to go into the yoke, instead of the other way around. In other words, I was trying to put it in "backwards."

Therefore, the Precision 372 should work for this application.

I went with the Spicer equivalent, which is part number 5-3022X.

I bought mine from a local driveshaft shop and had them install it in my driveshaft for me. I paid $30.00 installed.

You can use the Spicer 5-3022X or the Neapco 3-3130. According to Moser and the driveshaft shop I went to, they are identicle in dimensions and comparable in quality.

Ok, cool, so you left the yoke on that came with the rear right? Just making sure. And looking at my picture, am I putting the u-joint "backwards" (grooves don't match with the bearing caps?)?

Thanks,
Justin

Thanks,

Justin, I left the yoke on that came with the rear.

I can't tell by your picture whether you're installing the u-joint "backwards" or not.

Just take your driveshaft to a good driveshaft shop in town and they'll hook ya up.

Hehe, thanks, the problem is there are no good driveshaft shops here that I know of. Going to have to go to BR.

The shop I went to said I would need a Spicer 5-625X to make it work. He said the 3022 and the 3130 were the same as stock. So I got the 625X and it works, and it is the same u-joint that is on the front of the driveshaft.

Well if the 3022 and the 3130 were the same as stock, I would have been able to use my stock u-joint, but I wasn't.

I'm ended up getting the 3130 and it works.

Which yoke do you have? The 1310 or the 1350?

LOL, yeah thats what I thought too, but there was no use arguing with this guy. I have the 1310 yoke. He said that the 5-625x was stronger compared to the other 2, and it had no grease fitting.

Maybe he didn't realize that the 1310 yoke on the Moser is different that the 1310 yoke on the stock rear. The Moser rear uses a Dana 1310 yoke, and the stock rear uses a Mechanics 3R yoke. The dimensions are slightly different between the two.
