Default To Gridle or not to Girdle

What are the opinions out there about putting on a rear end girdle with a stud kit. Is it worth the money? Would just putting some good fluid be enough? I have an M6 and I know they are prone to exploding at the track, and I want the 10 bolt to last a while.

I would also like to know this. I have a A4 with a stall and 342 gears. I have been kicking around about adding one also. Lets hear some input

If you are trying to keep the 10 bolt as long as possible, then yes the girdle is a good mod, should add some structural integrity. Personally, I don't have one just because I am trying not to spend any $$$ on the stock rear, since I would like to swap it out soon for something stronger as soon as I've saved enough cash.

I asked the same question last week, not much response. I went ahead and ordered one, I'm having a 3.73 installed and decided might as well make it as safe as possible.

I had my gears done at Randys Ring and pinion, supposed to be one of the nations top gear suppliers and rebuilders. They told me it doesn't help at all. I was going to buy one from them and decided not to after they told me that. It has to do something, I would think and if not at least it is easy to change the fluid.

Yes, T/A gridle helps . Why does it help is because it keep the gears, locker, and axles for from flexing. So yes it helps.

If you check the parts for sale section theres 1 or 2 for sale right now. If you buy a nice used one for cheap then decideto go a different route then you could probably resell it for about what you got into it.

Could we get a few more responses? I too am very interested in this subject. A guy at the track last night swears by them, although he hadn't yet put one on his car.

I look at it this way.

you could spend well over a grand getting a new nice and strong posi, axles, c clip emilms, gear set, bigger pinion flange, girdle, rebiuld kit, labor etc etc etc and still shatter the rear with one good pass.

or you can take that about $1,500 and put it twords a 12 bolt. Thats the route that I took.

No matter what you do to the 7.65" 10 bolt you run into one problem. It's still a 7.65" 10 bolt. No matter what you put on around it you still have the main weekness of the gear set.

I thought 12-bolts typically run between $2000-$2500, but maybe that includes installation. Strange and Moser are the most often talked about 12-bolts....what about the Chevy 12-bolt?

they are 'chevy 12bolts' but moser/strange/etc make housings and parts, instead of using old gm rears and stuffing them with parts.

The girdle is a nice looking piece and makes gear oil
change easier even if it doesn't add strength.

Like i said. you can take the $1500 and put it TWORDS a 12 bolt. Not buy a 12 bolt with it. It makes a large chunk of the payment. all you need is about another 600ish depending on what you get and if you have it installed. By my logic after you put $1500 making the 10 bolt as strong as you can and pay another 300 bucks after you shatter the ring gear anyway it pretty much pays for itself.

HBH makes a strong point.

I got my whole 10 bolt housing for $430 shipped with gears loaded after a figure what I made selling my stock center.
That's a deal I couldn't pass up since I spun carrier bearing in the old one anyway. NOW I will start saving for the 12......

yes, the girdles are worth it....and like a previous poster said, if you end up going with a 12 bolt or nine inch you can sell the girdle. the rest of the parts for a rear aren't gonna hold much value, but a girdle will.......i've got one on my car and it's held up fine so far(a4 ssf4200 drs)......
