12-bolt OR 9"? Which is best? Ok i have been reading alot of posts & i see just as many people sayin they like the 12-bolt just as much as a 9". So the real question is, which one is the strongest & provides the best performance & reliability for a daily driver/ weekend warrior. Also which one is more cost effictive.
9" hands down. It is quiter, stronger, cheaper. Faults not as effecient (robs a little more power), weighs more (unless you get a billingley fabbed 9"), can't keep ABS unless you have a 4-channel rear (tcs/abs)

ok, time for another great question related to this.
If the 9" rear is supposed to be better(as in strength, quality, quietness, & price)
what attributes make it better?
P.S - I dont mind long posts so anyone who can fully explain this feel free to fill me in completely. When i go to purchase my rear, i want to be as educated about it as humanly possible & completely confident i purchased a rear that will probably never again have to be replaced.

parts are cheaper for a 9". Not really sure if it is any quieter as noise is usually associated with gears. The quality really depends on what brand of rear you buy as 9" and 12 bolt is generic. But as a rule, they are both good pieces regardless who builds them. 9'" uses a 9" gear and a 12 bolt uses an 8.75" gear (I think). thicker the gear relates to stronger gear.

ok, then lets get specific. Which brand is the best also. Moser or Strange or whatever else there is out there. I was really wanting a moser, so is the moser 9" better than the moser 12-bolt & why? And i do have TCS & ABS.

I believe if you want to keep ABS, you must get a 12 bolt. That is unless someone is now making a 9" with ABS.
I paid $1,400 + my stock 10 bolt for a soft locker 9". I see most 9" go used between $1,400 and $1,700. But I have seen them with all the options go used for $2,000 +

i have a moser 12 bolt w/ a 4.10 gear, eaton posi, 33 spline axles and the abs option. cost 2,200 new. the only thing i didn't get was the alum. diff cover. it's NOT noisy. a little more noisy than stock but definately nothing that pops out at you. you'll get a little more power to the ground and it will be a little lighter with a 12 bolt. i have not had a problem w/ mine yet. i love it. however, if you want the strongest rear end possible regardless of any other factors, the 9" is it. moser and strange are both great quality companies. i think strange is a little better quality... it's also a little more expensive.

Advantages for a 9 inch are that they don't usually break and you can change out the gears in no time. You wanna run an all motor setup throw some 430's in or what have you and then if you wanna go the following week to the track and spray the **** out of the car you can swap out to a lesser gear.
It does rob you of power and is heavier but you can make up for that with the bottle

I have a car that makes 407 at the wheels not impressive when compard to the rest of the guys on the board. I can tell you i had my Strange 12 bolt rebuilt 2x and it still screamed like a banchee. That was all with in half a year. I pulled the dame thing out switched to a 9" and have never been happier 12 bolt may be fine for the auto x guys but it will not handle 3600lb cars launching at 5k they were not designed for that. 11-1200hp no problem it is the weight of these cars that eats up the 12 bolts.

broke it once, rebuilt it with the parts that should have came in it from moser and all is good now.

I would like to know also. Im planning on about 450-500 RWHP by ther time im done with all my mods. And it will be a daily driver/street racer/weekend warrior. So which one (9" or 12-bolt) is the best choice for reliability & performance?
ok clutch packs that came in the rear from moser were carbon fiber and had 400lb springs which are stock replacement pieces = pos. replaced with 24 disc steel clutch pack and 800lb springs. have been good since replaced running @ 600rwhp. if you are buying a rear make sure you specify you want the 24 disc steel clutch packs and 800lb springs or you will be replacing them if you like to "use the posi" if you know what i mean.
