Default ??How much fluid for 9"??

I am thinking of going with 90W dino oil for the break-in, but how much fluid do I use? Might switch to 80W synthetic after 500 mile break in.

Thanks guys. I will see about locating some Kendal gear oil in the next couple weeks.
Ryan, do you know of anyone in Tallahassee that has a stock to 1350 conversion U-joint? None of the NAPA stores had a clue what I was talking about.

What kind of Diff are you running? I would really like to use synthetic in my 9" Moser with the Detroit Locker, but I think they advise against it. Sure would make it run cooler. Anyone know if all the mfgs. still insist on Dino gear oil for the Detroit Locker?

After break-in I wouldn't worry about changing over to synthetic.

Really? What would you suggest for a 9" with a full on Detroit Locker? (not a "soft locker")

Would you go with:
Amsoil, Redline, Royal Purple, or other?

Which weight? (I live in the desert where 170* track temps are not uncommon in the summertime)

SAE 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube

SAE 80W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube

SAE 85W-140 Synthetic Gear Lube

Thanks for any suggestions.

A Detroit locker is not a friction type differental the type of oil you use shouldnt matter, I run nothing but mobil one 75-90 for drag racing a oil with a thicker film strength isnt a bad idea i.e 80-140 I have seen some of the Red Line "shock proof" used with sucess

Hey Harley! How's it going?

I guess the best thing to do is give Dan a call and see what he recommends these days. The 9" was installed at Adam's but last time I was there that kid seemed clueless. I guess Rusty left for Montana or somewhere.

They put dino 80 w 140 in it when Rusty was there a couple of years ago. Not sure what others are using, but it makes sense to me to use the synthetic if it won't do any harm. The benefits in this heat are obvious. Also, there might not be as much parasitic power loss with the syn.

What do you guys use in those race trucks?

I will check with some of the Autozone stores around here. I am going to have a 31 spline Detroit Locker and will use 80W 90 Dino oil for the breakin and then might switch to a 80W 90 Synthetic.

I run regular 85/140 and my 9" takes less than two full quarts. I fill it till it dribbles out the side fill.

Hey John, that's what the shop that installed mine put in it as well. I wonder if the high quality synthetic gear oil would harm these 9"/Detroit Locker diifs? Have you ever asked around about it?

BTW. . . congrats on the new time man! Great job for the first time out. It'll probably go better when it cools down this fall.
