Convince me to get rid of my 2.73's!
Ok im gettin to the end of my bolton quest and looking for 11's on DR's. Its important to me to have an 11sec street car on street tires NA and stock engine, cuz its my goal Im adding ASP pulley's and FTRA to my list of mods in the sig. I know i need to get that 60' down, and I will.. eventually.
Ok so im looking at swapping out my 2.73's for some 3.42's. What do I stand to gain by lookin at my mods, and what rpm and in what gear do you go through the traps? I dont like the 2.73's cuz i am always shifting right at or right before the traps. And i dont want to go too high with gears, cuz i already have problems with traction and i will only be running Nitto DR's.
Please advise
Sean

wouldnt 3.73's and a 2.5 STR verter actually slow me down by causing massive traction problems in my 60' on DR's? I wont be using ET streets.
Thanks

Talk to Keymaster on this forum,
He has a 3500 stall and runs 373's and he runs really strong with them. They really woke up his car and it throws you in your seat when you take off.

With 2.73's, I was scared of LS1's
With 3.73's, LS1's are fun to beat

I swapped out my 2.73 rear with 3.23s, and the car feels alot better. Its way more responsive in town and just more fun to drive. I don't have any track comparisons though, but it definitly feels faster. IMHO, if you are into racing, get rid of the 2.73s.

Well lets see here........
The LS1 motor makes all it's power from 3K up. Wouldn't you want a gear to put you into that power band? Or do you want a gear that takes forever to get out of the low end, where the LS1 doesn't make ANY power? It's a mix of common sense and physics really
Seriously, 2:73's are the absolute worst gear you could run w/ an LS1. With a decent set of sticky tires and a 3:73 swap, I am willing to be you'll drop 4 tenths and gain ~2-3 mph. Go for it.

Thanks for your reply Damian, I value your input
So you honesty think Nittos willbe able to hold the ST3500 and 3.73 combo? I dunno, seems to me I will get even worse than my 1.9 60' now. But I guess i need to learn how to drive the verter better. Anyone got a 3.73 rear for sale?

I've seen it done on a good track in a car that had some weight removed. However, if you can't hook now, more gear isn't going to help. Make sure you heat your nittos well; learning to really roast them allowed me to go from 1.9x on them to 1.6x in the good weather.
3.42s can be an option too, but I like my 3.73s .

I feel all warm and fuzzy inside lol
While I am not a fan of Nittos, you can get them to hook decent when they're hot. I mean you have to really smoke the **** out of them and they will hook decent. If you're wanting to stick with a good drag radial, I highly recommend some BFG's in the future. I have ran both Nittos and BFG's at the track, and there is no comparison. Nitto's hook like street tires compared to a BFG.
You car will haul *** with 3:73's. It will feel like a whole new beast, trust me.

Sweet! Keep us updated. Just remember to give your gears a proper break in. If you come out of the shop parking lot sideways, you will be back there very soon . Keep us posted!

Re: Convince me to get rid of my 2.73's!
Question for 3.73r's.. what rpm's an in which gear do you go through the traps. Assuming you have like a 111-114 trap speed that is
I wanna be roaring through the traps

A lot of this will depend on tire size. While I can't be exactly "sure" what rpm you'll be crossing at, it will definately be over 5500 rpm's which is just about perfect.

Re: Convince me to get rid of my 2.73's!
Ok sounds good.. Im putting on my Zr1's this weekend.
17" all around
275/40/17 on front
315/35/17 dr on back
After thinking bout it some more, i *might* have to make a small sacrifice and go with 3.42's. Why? Well i can pick up a whole new rear for about $300 (lots cheaper than puttin diff gears in my car), AND i could have a backup, just in case i were to break something.. hhehe lets hope not.
I believe I would still get a nice improvement dont ya think?

Oh yes, 3.42's will be a definite improvement
I think you will be happy with them. The new gears will also make your converter feel tighter around town.

I agree, 3:42's is another good choice for an A4. Compared to 2:73's, 3:42's will still wake the car up like you wouldn't beleive. ANYTHING is better than 2:73's. 3:42's will also be a tad nicer to your wallet on gas. Good luck and let us know how you like em.
