Choosing your axle size.

Choosing your axle size.
I've always told people to get the smallest spline axle that will hold they're power, I always suggest 30 or 31 spline (more than strong enuf for 99% of the people out there, anything else is just more rotational mass). But people seem to think they're 12 second car needs 35 spline axles. Well i was on the crapper today reading my GM High Tech and low and behold the cover cars headline says "FASTEST LT1 EVER!, TURBO 'BIRD BLASTS 8.0 @ 177" its the october 2005 issue. And guess what axles they run in that car? 35 spline gun drilled? nope. 31 spline axles cutting 1.25 60 ft's.
Just some food for thought.

This is my dilema right now.. apparently I have a choice of either a 31 or 35 spline for the set up I will have. Only about 580rwhp or so... I guess 31s will be just fine huh?
If it matters this will be on a M6.

i have 31 spline and when i was M6 full weight car i would launch on a wet 150 shot off the shift light (6,400 rpm). I was dynoing 424/420 on motor and was weighing in at 3600 lbs.

The issue for most people is risk v. reward. The bigger axle may be overkill, but some people are switching rears because reliability is an issue. If you drag your daily driver, its worth a couple HP to know you'll drive it home from the track.
