Default pinion seal problems

has anyone else had the horrible problems with pinion seals ive had? ive gone through two gear installs now, and the first time i went through 3 seals(had to go back twice) and now this second time im having to take it back tomorrow because its leaking again. its the little stuff like this that really makes me hate my car sometimes, and oh how i wish i would have just left 3.23s there in the first place.

sorry for the rant, just wanted to know if this was common. the shop i had do it the first time is supposed to be the best around here, and the guy who did it the second is supposed to be the best guy, period. so i dont think its because they dont know what they are doing.

Sounds like another installation error....... they maybe the best in your area, but I guess its just the best that they can do ??

Simple steps to take to insure a leak free seal:

1) Clean all parts involved and I mean REALLY clean
2) Scotch brite the yolk seal surface (or emery/crokus cloth)
3) Apply sealer to the outside of the seal and the splines in the pinion yolk
4) Apply grease to the seal surface and to the seal surface of the yolk
5) Use red locktite to the pinion nut and stake the nut when complete
6) Let sealer 'skin' before you add lubricant
7) Stay away from thinner lubricants, use a minimum of a straight weight 90 or 140

it was a 4 wheel drive shop that is heavily competitive in the off road arena and they have done hundreds on installs before. im guessing they just didnt care about mine.

Go lay the smack down then.......

If it leaks after they replaced the seal, they would be liable to fix it until it doesnt. Well, at least that is how I do business.

you see, the day i picked my car up, right after i payed, the dink says "and we dont warranty our work for you speed racers. we dd the job right and we know it will work." and this is right after i payed them. the next morning i go to see my car has a nice sized puddle under it, so i look and its the pinion seal. i took it right up there and demanded they fix it and they did. but about a month later it started whining like all heck and i called them, and i was "out of luck".

so i just got toby harl(or harlson)-sorry toby!-to rebuild it for me. and it turned out it was the inner pinion bearing. he fixed it, sounds great, but he messed up on the pinion seal. no biggie, it was a quick fix for him, and it now appears my rear end woes are over. and toby is the man. he does all his own work and he won the top truck challenge a few times(national comp), i think, that the 4 wheel drive magazine(4 wheel and off road?) puts on every year. his orange blazer was a monster.

I thought the leaking pinion seal was just an LT1 thing. Since we have the bad vibrations from our steel driveshafts.

Watch him do it. Is he using a new crush sleeve?
They are a one time deal.

Have him put in a solid spacer they tend to help with the leaky F-body seal syndrome

Sigh.. I'm sorry man. These are not the best built cars, but they are quite simple to work on. Now might be the time you start gathering tools and work on this car yourself.

Best of luck.

me and my buddies have done everything else to my car and theirs, its just we didnt want to do this ourselves because we have seen/heard how difficult gear installs can be. maybe the third time is the charm?

Mine has been replaced twice as well. First time under warranty at the dealer, and it stayed dry for over 20k miles, then it began to leak after I switched to synthetic fluid Had it replaced by my regular shop last year, back to regular gear oil, and it leaked almost right away. Brought it back to the dealer for a diagnosis, they recommended replacing the yoke as well, saying that was causing the leak.? Still leaks now, does not make any noise, so I just top it off every month. I plan to get this solved one way or the other. Good luck.

Swapping a pinion seal has nothing to do with the gears. It's almost as easy as an oil change.
