A gear change will be done this winter. At a minimum
3.42s but am considering the 3.73. Although the 4.10s seem like they would be fun but, I want to stay away from excessive wheel spin and maintain reasonable mpg. Mods are bolt ons, intake, fixed back seats, 5 pts, roll bar and slicks on the track.
Methinks you do not provide enough info here to get the answers you seek.
On the road courses you will have to find a compromise for what works in the turn sections vs the goal on the longest straight and whether or not you consider 6th or 5th your top gear at the track, and which track.
At the most basic level you will experience such a small difference from 3.23 to 3.42 it would be a waste of money. Do some math to target your goals to just past your horsepower RPM peak before braking at the end of the longest straight.
What you end up with as a DD won't really make much difference unless you go the other way.

4.10 is 41 teeth on ring-gear with 10 teeth on pinion, while 4.11s are a 37-tooth ring-gear with a 9-tooth pinion (37/9 ).
Given equal ring/pinion diameter, the gear set with more teeth is going to be stronger, not to mention the higher numerical ratio chosen, the smaller the pinion and is therefore weaker, so if strength is a factor in your choice it's something else to consider.

Where did that comment come from? The car actually weighs 3365 lbs.

The two need to cork together, and the best way to do that is to have the gears you want to run in your car when you install the converter. JMHO...
Gotta agree here, and then some. I just went through the process and to select the perfect combination required more than just a rear end ratio. Engine, cam specs and vehicle weight were also factors right along with the duty cycle (street time vs track time) of the converter. After all spending 8 bills without exhausting research would be silly for me. I cant afford to do it once, let alone do it again....

to me there are 3 ratio options for street use. 3.73, 3.90, or 4.10 I run 3.90's with my factory sized 17 inch tires, it's too perfect. I couldn't imagine the gas mileage running 4.10's, but I know some guys like them.

that chart does not seem right at all for the M6s. theres no way with 4.10 gears u can do 40 in first gear (at redline)
Did you ever get an answer to this question? I'm curious how big of an affect this will have on the regular drivability of the car after this install. Will it be annoying to shift so often?

Guess it's time to welcome this thread back from the dead.

3.23 (GU5) was the highest numeric gear offering from the factory for an A4 V8 4th gen.

3.42 (GU6) could only be had stock with an A4 4th gen in V6 trim.
