For track use, it is fairly straight forward. What rpm do you cross at now? Let's assume that you want to cross at 6400 in 4th:
6400/current rpm * current gear ratio = desired ratio.
If you plan to run bigger tires, then you need to increase the ratio. If you are willing to shift into 5th, then you can go even higher. Just make sure you are fast on the 1-2 as it will come up quick if you are running 4.56 or higher gears.
If you highway race, you can do the same thing as above; just start with your normal top speed and current rpm and do the math so that you are at 6400 at that mph.
