Default Gears

I know nothing about gears and I am about to order a ring and pinion in 3.73 and was wondering if I need a new carrier also or will the stock one work. Also is my stock 99 carrier a series 2 or series 3?

Since you have an M6, your stock gears should be 3.42, and you have a 3 series carrier. Why are you switching gears? 3.42 to 3.73 is not a very big change to spend the money on, unless you needed new ones anyway.

I am having to go into the rear anyway to replace bearings so I figure I might as well do this while I am at it. I am going with 3.73 because 4.10 will kill my gas mileage too much. Like I said, I really don't know too much in this area.

The stock carrier will work just fine . We have the gears in stock and on sale right now for $159.95 (Motive Performance) and we also have Master install kits which include new pinion and carrier bearings for $69.95 with free shipping . You can order online at www.neweraperformanceparts.com or call us during business hours at 585-865-1832 .

4:10s won't hurt your highway mileage too much but will most likely seriously affect your city mileage as you will have trouble resisting the urge to stand on it

I've got Motive 3.73 gears, and I like them a lot.

Motive Performance gears do not whine when set up right , never had a car come out of my shop louder than stock after install . Sometimes the 4.10's whine just a little , but it is hard to hear unless you really listen for it . Most guys with M6 go with 4.10's and A4's go with 3.73's , but it also does depend on what you are trying to achieve as well .
