Default Moser Axles

I just pulled out my differential and axles in search of my rearend noise. Turns out it appears I need two new axles because they are both eaten up on the outer edges where the wheel bearings are. What would cause the bearings to just go out like that? Anyway the real question is are the Moser 28 spline axles good stock replacements or is there something better?

The Mosers are fine and you can also get stock replacement axles from Superior. I think Summit carries them.

But, let me tell you what you should do, save yourself some money and get a pair from a salvage yard.

The stock bearings that came in these rear-ends are **** poor. Inspect the pinion and carrier bearings closely, they are probably pitted.
All six bearings were trashed in my car at 58k

Hope this helps

I will be replacing all the bearings in the rear. TRex, are they both in excellent shape and how much are they? Are they factory?

They are both factory, from a factory V6 rear, so I know they are not abused. I will have to check the bearing surface condition, will do that tonight if you are interested.

Moser's shop is about 45 minutes West of my house. They make great stuff over there. My Dad bought the 9" for his Pro Street '67 Camaro from them.

I replaced mine just a little bit ago with the Moser axles from Summit, did you order the bearing kit too? Also the abs ring will need to come off your old axles and pressed/put on your new axles. It took me a little while to get them on. I have been real happy with them so far, good price for both.

(Mike2000Z28) I ordered the Ratech Deluxe gear installation kit so I will get wheel bearings also. Was it hard to get the rings off and how did you do it.

Two steel plates and hammer the on the old axles, careful not to mess up that aluminum ring. Get them on the new axle you might want to take it to a shop. My buddy had a press and did it for me.

After all that work I still have a vibration at 70mph, it sucks after all the work with the new axles.

You can get the rings off with a simple propane torch, just heat them up from the outside in, and when they are hot enough they will fall off. I clamped my axles in a vise with the studs sticking up. Took about 5 mins of even heating.

For the studs I would get a good impact gun and a old lug nut and slowly drive the studs into the new axles. As far as heating the rings off be careful they are aluminum and either hammering or heating can worp them. Good luck.

The rings are not aluminum, they are steel, check them using a magnet and you will see. You can put the studs in the new axle using an old lug nut, but you should use a washer, because the lug will dig into the axle and will flatten the lug tip. Make sure you lubricate the stud threads with some grease, gear lube, or never seize so that you don't damage the threads. Don't use an impact gun, it is too hard to control. Torque them in with a wrench, slowly.

I ordered them with studs but I am sure I will still have to put them in my self and the rings will be a trick

Definitely use the washer with the old lug nut and take your time. I'm almost a 100% sure when I pulled the abs ring of the axles that they were aluminum, either way that will be a pain to pull off.
