Default 8.8" ford rear end worthwhile for an f body?

Is the ford 8.8 rear end / axle something worthwhile to put in an ls1 t/a to handle more power? Basically is it worth it to swap over the stock 10 bolt? I know that most people go with either a ford 9" or a GM 12 bolt.

My friend has an 87 5.0 mustang that he is using the motor and tranny in a project 4x4 and will give me the rear axle for free...otherwise I wouldn't bother.

Thanks in advance for your help

if you get it for free I would say jump on it. You can make those things handle a good deal of power. I think that there is a stickey on the 8.8 in our f-bodies.

You would be better off putting a 12 bolt or 9" in your F-Body. With the A4 you'd be alright with a 12 bolt. People have tried to make a Ford 8.8" rear work in their F-Bodies, but from what I've read, they haven't had much success with it. I believe that the main problem with putting an 8.8 in an F-Body is making a torque arm mount that will hold up. You can read more about the 8.8s in the Gears and Axles forum. Hope this helps.
