Default Girdle and Stud Kit Install

I recently picked up a new girdle and stud kit and have a question regarding the installation of the stud kit. Does anyone have a write up on how to put them in? I searched, but didn't come up with anything. I have a good write up on the girdle itself, so that's not a problem.

If no one knows of a write up... does anyone have any comments about putting in the stud kit?

Thanks,
Marc

I had a buddy of mine do mine, and he just took the bolts out, put the studs in. Rear end is still hanging in there...

just had to search this out- thought i'd help you lazy bastards.

stud kit- pull ONE stock bolt, thread the stud in and torque to 10 ftlbs. put on nut and washer finger tight. remove the other bolt in that cap, put in that stud to 10 ft lbs. then tighten both nuts to 60-75 ftlbs. repeat on opposite cap. use locktight if desired.

cover- back out pre-load bolts all the way so you don't break the cover putting it in, use silicone instead of gasket on the cover and dab silicone on the threads of the pre-load bolts so they don't leak.

torque bolts on cover to 25 ftlbs, preload bolts to 5 ftlbs. locktight on jamnuts if desired.

80-90weight oil, with posi additive depending on differential. about 2 quarts total.

The main thing is to make sure you back out the studs before you torque the cover bolts to 25lbs. Then, you want to torque the studs to 5Lbs. I torque the locknuts for the studs to 35lbs.

Done -

Wow .... My post count got hammered down a bit !!!

getting a rear end girdle pretty soon.

what are the stud kits? i assume they are rreplacements for the perimeter bolts.
what is the advantage of having studs compared to bolts??

and the studs that get torqued to 5lbs...i assume those are the preload studs.

Just saw this. Hope this is not too late.

A stud kit replaces bolts on the carrier bearing caps with studs and nuts. This setup is stronger than using bolts.

Nothing special to install them. Once you have the rear cover off, remove the bolts on the carrier bearing caps and put them aside. Make sure to mark which sides the caps come off. Apply LocTite on one end of a stud and insert into a bolt hole on the rear end. Tighten to 10 ft-lb. To tighten, put two nuts together on the opening threads and apply wrench on the top nut. When the stud is tight enough, remove the nuts and repeat the process for all studs. Put the carrier bearing caps back on the studs (remember which sides they come off), apply LocTite, insert nuts and tighten to 65 ft-lb.
