Default Gear Tooth Pattern

This pattern is telling me I need to put a thinner pinion shim in, correct. I started off with a .030", what should I try now? Is there a way to test it without ruining the crush sleeve everytime?

thanks
Andrew

You should use a brake hone on a set of bearings so they slip fit on (for set up only). Always leave the seal and crush sleeve out until you find all the right shims. And use a die grinder and grind the crimped sections of the nut out so it threads on by hand. Set the pinion preload to the same inch pounds everytime you set it up.

You need to go thicker with the pinion shim.

I found this helpful.

PATTERN MOVEMENTS SUMMARIZED

(1) Decreasing backlash moves the ring gear closer to the pinion.

Drive pattern (convex side of gear) moves slightly lower and toward the toe.

Coast pattern (concave side of gear) moves lower and toward the toe.

(2) Increasing backlash moves the ring gear away from the pinion.

Drive pattern moves slightly higher and toward the heel.

Coast pattern moves higher and towards the heel.

(3) Thicker pinion position shim with the backlash constant moves the pinion closer to the ring gear.

Drive pattern moves deeper on the tooth (flank contact) and slightly toward the toe.

Coast pattern moves deeper on the tooth and toward the heel.

(4) Thinner pinion position shim with the backlash constant moves the pinion further from the ring gear.

Drive pattern moves toward the top of the tooth (face contact) and toward the heel.

Coast pattern moves toward the top of the tooth and slightly toward the toe.

First, what kind on BL # do you have? What does it look like when you tighen it up?

Leave the crush coller out until you have your setup nailed, then install that along with the seal.

Backlash is set at .011" ( spec for these gears are .08 - .012"). I haven't checked the pattern with BL less than .011". Thanks Alot for the help!!

Yes, put the .035 and your backlash should be .008-.009 after the change. post up the pattern after that.

when setting pinoin bearing preload, can you use a clicker type inch pound torque wrench? Or does it have to be a beam type?

thanks

Beam or Dial type only. Preferably Dial, but they are more expensive.

This is with .035" pinion shim. Still whines but not as bad. Only at 45 mph and faster while maintaining certain speed. I dont know, what do you guys think?
