Default Help decide which gears.

I have read so many posts that I'm more confused now than ever.

With the mods in my sig I have managed to lose a tremendous amount of bottom end. I never took my car to the track before my mods but I know that 14.2 in the 1/4 is no good. My 60' times are 2.2, 2.3 and my mph in the 1/4 has been 100 - 103. My launches are consistent and so are the 60' times so I know its just not bad driving at least I think so. This is all without the NOS in the equation

My question is...MY car is a 98 Trans Am A4 (not a WS6). What gears are in it? 2.73 or 3.23 ? From what I have read I am leaning towards 3.73 as this is not my daily driver anyway's. With changing the gears.....is it necessary to change the torque converter or can I do that down the road? Also....I know I have to get the speedo calibrated but do I have to get my shift points adjusted also? My car has 54,000 miles on it if it matters and I changed my wheels to 18" with 275-35-18 tires.

I am looking for more take off from the line because as it stands right now my car is a turd off the line since my mods.

Read the RPO codes to figure out what gears came in it. GU2 - 2.73. GU5 - 3.23.

Go with 3.73s. You don't have to do a converter right now. You will need your speedo recalibrated but not shift points (think about it, the car is still going to shift at XXXX rpm's no matter how fast it reaches that rpm).

You can find that in the VIN right? My VIN starts out.... 2G2FV22.....so the G2 indicates I have 2.73's right? Thanks alot for the information. Now since I want to go with the 3.73's I need the "thick gears" or the Gear spacer since I have a 2 series diff correct? Or will the Strange 3.73's for a 2 series carrier work fine? I believe I will also need the Ratech install kit.....deluxe?

No, RPO codes are not in the VIN. They are listed in the door jam, or in the glovebox. You'll see a sticker with 50+ letter/number codes.

Find out for sure before you decide what carrier you need.

Oh..ok. Yes.....the only two G codes are GU2 and G80...so 2.73's are whats in it now.

I called a local shop that specializes in Fbody's and corvettes and they told me to get the AAM 3.73 gears and a super shim kit. They quoted me $200 labor.....from what I have read it sounds comparable to other installs posted here.

You should really get the convertor at the same time. Convertor and gears in that car should get you right into the 12s on tire....
