Default Rearend noise

My stock 10 bolt with 3.23`s that has never been opened has started making a whining noise. It sounds like a 4 wheel drive going down the road. It gets louder the faster you go. Tires have about 1000 miles on them since the last rotation. I`m not ruling out the tires, but I find it hard to believe they are making the noise. The car only has 25,000 miles on it and I wasn`t doing anything to cause any damage to the rearend. I just checked the fluid a couple months ago and it was full. It sits in my garage most of the time and there isn`t any oil on the floor. Any ideas?

Gears are going to make noises, and as far as not beating on them, its kinda luck of the draw. My buddy had 3500, yes 3thous, 5hund miles on his 02 WS6, he was pulling into a parkinglot, bam. The gears gave out. Never did a burnout, never had it at the track, I dont think he ever pushed the pedal all the way to the floor. Now there is a guy that goes to the track EVERY WEEK. Got stock rear, 4.10s and has launched HARD over 50 times now, and never had a problem. My stock gears have wined for about 20k miles. And I only have 30k on the car. Still no probs though.

It doesn`t really sound like a gear whine. I was just cruising down the hwy at about 70 mph when it started. Now it is louder since it started. It sounds more like your driving down the road with mud tires on the car. The sound is coming from the back. The tires have no more than 4000 miles on them and were rotated about 1000 miles ago. There is no vibration coming from the tires. However, there is a vibration that comes from that damned poly trans mount I put in when I put poly motor mounts in.

Some tires can be noisier than others. I dont know why yours would be so loud though. Are they at the correct pressure?

The tires on my car have always been extra quiet. I have never had a tire go from being quiet to all of a sudden sounding like a mud tire. Especially the rear tires. The noise started as I was driving down the road. Front tires can start to sound like that when they haven`t been rotated in a while, but I never heard a back tire do this. If a belt breaks in a tire will it still ride smooth?

well from my experience, mine started to whine it seemed like it would do it on and off every few seconds. Well after 2 weeks of this I stalled it up at 430 in the morning and cut it loose and bam, ripped the pinion teeth off. So depends on how you drive it. Fine if you dont beat on it. But get it checked if you get on it alot.

Hi Folks
mine started to whine and I pulled the rear end to find the pinion gear had a couple of teeth cracked which still does not make sense why. The teeth that has cracks, it was at the toe of the gear and not in the area that makes contact with the the ring gear. If I did not take it apart and fix it, it would have come a part and really screwed up my rear end.

Well, I drove the car again today and the noise is getting louder. I`m starting to be able to determine what the sound actually is. It definately doesn`t sound like tires. I sounds more like a bearing. Possibly an axle bearing or the pinion bearing. I don`t think it would be a carrier bearing. I don`t plan on inspecting what the sound is. I`m just gonna park the car till I can afford a 9in or 12 bolt. I do have a firstgen camaro 12 bolt that I may cut all the brackets off the 10 bolt and weld onto the 12 bolt. Haven`t decided yet.

My rear end recently started whining and I'm in the process of trying to figure out what's causing it.

If its the gears, will a new set of gears fix the problem? My car's got 84k on it ... and it just started whining out of the blue, is this typical?

Whine is usually gear sound. The pinion bearing can make similar sounds, but bearings usually make a kinda humming sound. Mine sounds like mud tires or a tire out of balance. I`m going to pull the axles. I believe one of them is wearing due to lack of oil getting to the axle bearings.

Hi Folks
After looking at my pinion gear, I found more cracks. It looks like four teeth were ready to come off - there are fine cracks at the other end of the gear. Under pressure the gears were making a real funny sound - like the gears were separating from it. Don't wait, pull the gears now and inspect them - like I say the ring does not have any damage.
thanks
Bill

my 01 z28 has a whining rear... im guessing its a wheel bearing... so after adding the price of swappin the 2.73's for some 3.73's... deluxe rebuild.. the gears them self.. new moser axels.. a t/a gurdle.. stud kit..fluids.. and a series 3 diff (since nobody around here wants to install gears in a series 2 cause "they cant get it how they want it") .. so now im saving for a 12bolt.. or a 4 chanell 10bolt w/ 3.73's already installed... i still romp the gas all the time.. i know i shouldnt... if it goes before i swap it ill just have to drive my 94 z28
