Switching from 3.23 to 3.73 gears
I am looking for more SOTP from launch, more torque. A wll respected mechanic hear said best bang for the buck is to change my gears to 3.73.
I am not concerned about 1/4 ET's right now.
I have a 2001 FireHawk with an Auburn (I think)
It's GU5 and WU6?
Anyway, here is a link to my car and the mods I have. Yank 3200 TC, ASP Pullies, FIPK, Cut-Out, HPP3, TR Ported MAF ends etc.
http://home.attbi.com/~wegetourmail/...ome.html-.html
What is the experts opinions here?
I have heard Pro's and Con's and place
high value on the answers I recieve here.
Remember I want bang for buck SOTP!

Re: Switching from 3.23 to 3.73 gears
Max,
I'm wondering the same thing. I just installed my Corsa Exhaust and it is pretty loud with my ST3500 converter and 3.23 gears. When it rev's up to 3000 RPM taking off easy it seems loud so I was thinking the 3.73's would help tighten up the verter and allow lower RPM's when taking off easy. I've heard the feel is noticeable but actual track improvements may only be a tenth in the 1/4 mile maximum. For the fairly low cost, I think I am going to do it this year.

I'm sold on it too now after doing some reading.
So which ones? OEM. Richmond, USA?

Re: Switching from 3.23 to 3.73 gears
I went from 3.23's to 3.73's and I really felt it ,the new gears would actually make me spin off the line even with the nittos. Since you already have a converter ,gears would be a great mod.

Re: Switching from 3.23 to 3.73 gears
Great thread we have going. I would like to thank everyone for the answers and ask another question.
My mechanic is going to change the bearings and bolts too (he said it was a good idea) better, stronger bolts. Parts are just a little over 200 for US Gears. I have made my appointment for next week.
So, me being not mechanicly inclined (ignorant on the subject) my question is;
Will changing the gears to after market 3.73's in anyway take away any of the High Perfomance Auburn parts etc listed in my sig that came with the car as stock? A local friend went from 3.23's to 3.73's and still gets 280 on a tank of gas and he loves them. I am not a track animal I am doing this for SOTP. On the freeway at 70mph I currently idle at around 2000 in overdrive. With my HPP3 I can easily change the gear ratio's etc in my computer too (I am glad I bought that!)
TIA

Re: Switching from 3.23 to 3.73 gears
Joel,
I think I will get Edit and sell my MAFT and HPIII - that is the best solution based on my tastes and if I decide I want a little more gear and tightness I will probably do 3.42's if attemping the install myself. I wasn't aware that Edit had been out for my 2001 but I see that it is. I can imagine that tweaking the partial throttle shift points and removing TM makes the looseness feel much better when taking off easy. I actually think my ST3500 feels perfect when taking off with 1/2 throttle or more but when going real easy I get all those looks like I'm racing people but my car is hardly moving - the Corsa Exhaust now makes that more so. I may try a little sound deadening material in the trunk area too.
Max,
If I were doing gears I would get Genuine Superior/GM gears. I only say this because any older articles I've read from this board and others gave me the impression that the Superior/GM gears are often the most quiet. check out the sponsor TBYRNE - they have Superior gears with the master install kit for I think $289. They are a very good sponsor and have always got me the right parts promptly and for a good and fair price. I think they are still giving 5% discounts to internet orders as well.
Good luck and let me know how it goes.
Regards,
Mitch R.

Re: Switching from 3.23 to 3.73 gears
Thanks Rich,
I did go with GM gears on the advice of my mechanic. He said the same thing.
199.00 for the gears and 109.00 for "the kit."
Bearings, shims bolts etc.
$550.00 OTD installed including fluids. He did not reccomend Synthetic with the Auburn. My appointment is pn the 13th. I can't wait!

Re: Switching from 3.23 to 3.73 gears
Hey Joel,
Nice to talk to you again - sorry I haven't been around in a while but work has been really crazy and I've been travelling a ton.
thanks for the info, I may actually get LS1Edit instead and change part throttle shift points - that is a great idea ! I'm just not sure I will care for the fuel economy change and the RPM's at 70 MPH when on the highway ?? Still thinking about it.
On a side note, I've read some install notes on installing gears and it looks fairly straight forward - do you know off hand how easy or hard it is to do and do it with minimal if any gear whine ?
Max,
I think the 3.73's are a great idea as long as you don't mind a little less fuel economy and high RPM's on the thruway @ 70+ mph.
01Ws6.... Please do let us know how you like them but more importantly how tolerable the RPM's are, how noisy/quiet the gears are, and how accelleration is and traction.
thanks,
Mitch R.
