Re: How rough is missing a shift on drivetrain? It all depends on what you mean by "miss" a shift. If you slammed a lower gear then expected: 2nd gear to 1st instead of 3rd or 3rd to 2nd rather then 4th you could bend pushrods, valves or both, you could float a valve into a piston and screw the whole motor. If you simply hit the gate and just rev it probably will just slightly bend a pushrod, depends how high you take the rpms above redline. The rev limiter will only work on accellerating in gear, like if the are at the track (1/4 mile) and riding 3rd you may hit the rev limiter trying to squeeze that last foot or two without shifting to forth. If you hit a wrong lower gear its a manula override and the rev limiter is useless.

Re: How rough is missing a shift on drivetrain? The grinding isn't that big of a deal....the motor takes it pretty hard if you throw it iinto the wrong gear.
Back when I raced manuals...before the racing gods showed me the joys of high stall a4's....i pay supper close attention and if fel trouble I would let off and clutch it.
I did the ol 2-1 shift a few times in my m6 Ihad but I could always clutch it nad let off in time to keep from screwin anything up.
one more thing...if you miss or start to miss a gear don't force it....just let it go...there will be more races.

No big deal really. Just don't make a habit of it.
And yes, the biggest fuggup you can make is to hit a lower gear than you were in at high rpm.
