i have a 30th anniversay black i don't really ever drive it. it has 73k on it now, i am starting to mod it quiet a bit, i want cai, gears, sfc, cam ,heads an lt's what gears should i go with? i have 273's in it now i want 373's would that be bout perfect ofr my z28 any info would help a ton!

What do you want the car to do? Be just a fun street car? Street/strip? Do you want the best 1/4 mile times you can reasonably get??

If it's just your weekend car / toy car, I'd say go with 4.10's, but then again, pretty much everybody else will say 3.73's . But if you want 1/4 mile times, but still really good highway mileage, you could throw a stall converter in, leave the 2.73's, and you'd have the best of both worlds. I had 4.10's in my car though, and they worked great. I still daily-drove my car on the highway and everything ... sure, I lost some MPG on the highway, but in town and on average (city/hwy mix) I got the same fuel mileage with 4.10's as I got with 2.73's.

If you want the ultimate 1/4 mile combo, get 4.10's AND a stall converter, and your car will kick a$$ down the strip. It'll still be very streetable, and with a lock-up converter, you can still take it on the highway.

It really depends what you want your car to do.

 

Why not 3.90? I will be doing a set soon.

Is there an 3.90 for the 4th gen Fbodies?

 

You can get 3.90's if you have an aftermarket diff (ie: 12-bolt, and perhaps a 9").

 

someone (i believe Richmond) has just starting making 3.90s for F-body 10 bolts.

4.10s are WAY fun on an automatic, but don't plan on keeping any amount of gas in your car.
3.73s will be alot of fun too, and will pick your car up alot.
3.42s will pick your car up a good bit, and are a good alternative if you want your car quicker and will keep good gas milage.

personally i'd go with 3.73s

 

i think 373's are teh best b/c u have good top end but also good starts! plus the gas i d care bout!

 

I've had both 3.42 and 3.73 in my A4. I would go this the 3.73s, car really picks up over 100 mph compared to the 3.42s

 

high perf chevy had an article last year "ls1 do's & don'ts" they recommended 3:73's for autos & 4:10's for sticks. i'm worried about gas milage so i probably won't go with any deeper than 3:42's good luck. ps i have 2:73's, why did gm offer those?

4.10s are the way to go in my opinion.
motive(ithink) just started making 3.90s for stock rearends.

 

Motive did start making 3.90's, I have a pre production set waiting to get installed. I guess they got a few other people to test them though because they are selling them.

 

I think those 3.90 will be nice for a daily drive M6.

 

And an A4 .

I've had both 3.73's and 4.10's with my A4. Compared to 2.73's, they'll both seem like they're "screaming" the motor to cruise on the highway, but for the couple hundred RPM difference between 3.73's / 4.10's, it doesn't really seem any "worse" with 4.10's. Although now that they're making a 3.90 gear, that has certainly gotten my attention.

 

Do 3.73s on that ***.
