Default Which is truly faster?

We have a long term argument going on at the job... Whether or not an A4 is faster than an M6... I had always thought that manuals are faster however I am beginning to believe that autos are due to consistency... which is truly faster in drag racing?

It depends. If you find someone who can drive a 6 speed it will be pretty hard to outrun it in a auto. But if you take your average Tom Dick or Harry the Auto will be your best bet. I have outran more 6 speeds than autos.

It all comes down to the driver and that is about all there is to it. Well if you put a converter and slicks(to both cars)in an auto its gunna make a hella difference.

I hope I didn't just contridict what I just said.

It depends.With traction,at the strip for example,auto's do really well.An auto's e.t. will be good realitive to their trap speed.An M/6 & an A/4 might both go 13.3x, but the M/6 will trap 106/107 & the auto will only trap 103/104.From a highway roll in two otherwise equal cars,the M6 will pull away from an auto.

To answer your question as asked, the M6 is faster in the quarter for equally powered cars.

As far as ET though, an A4 with a good converter is very difficult to beat.

M6= street
A4= track

A4's can run 12.0's at 111mph
M6's can run 12.0's at 114 mph

more mph makes them quicker on the street(top end)

but for track you cant beat a A4 <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

M6 guys dont have the same joy as riding in a brutal 1.3 60 footing street racing animal. There's nothing like it. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="gr_tounge.gif" />

I trap 124 to 125 in good weather..... who says A4's dont have a good top end?

Yanked A4 vs M6 in a free way race = Easy money when your packing a TP4400.

I'll take the Auto anyday. Street OR track. <img border="0" alt="[pimp]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_pimp.gif" />

A4's cost HP. You are going to put 4% (locked) to 10% (unlocked) less to the rear wheels in an A4. Additionally A4's have a wider gear spacing, although they have a better 1st gear. On a stock basis, these factors give a good M6 driver a substantial advantage.

However, a good high stall torque converter (at least 3500 stall) can give an A4 a huge advantage in low end and midrange torque. This translates into killer launches in the 1/4 and a big improvement over stock from a roll. At a roll from lower speeds, a big stall A4 can be competitive, but at higher speeds (e.g. race 80 - 130 mph), the extra rwhp of the M6 will win out.

IMO, for the best ET an A4 with a converter. Personally I love 6 speeds for my daily driver.

No question, A4 is king on the strip. It takes a skilled driver to do the M6 gig on the track. I'm not good at it, so my 60' times suck. I always get left behind at the line and have to play catch up at the top end.

What's quicker??

M6 = broken parts on launch = my 17.5 HP Poulan with 42" cut is faster than my car right now.

A4 = don't know yet, but supposed to be less likely to break with a built tranny.
