Default Strange 12 bolt & Torque Arm Mount

OK so I have decided to go with a Strange 12 bolt for many reasons that I won't list.

One that I will list is the fact that the torque arm mount is nothing like the Moser.

My question is for people that have the Strange 12 bolt. Does the TA mount the same way that it does with the stock 10 bolt? I really don't want to have to jack up the car and tighten bolts every few weeks.

I don't care if a Moser is cheaper, faster to get, stronger or is what everyone else has. I live in New England and the car is down for at least 5 months because of the damn road salt so I have all the time they need to build one.

Yes...the Strange uses two through bolts just like the 10-bolt. That is the only reason why I didn't order the Moser. I just ordered mine on Friday, so I'm thinking it'll be here in a little over a month or so.

Good beacuse I really don't need to add more "problems" to a car I want to just get in a drive.

I have had my Strange for a little over a year and its held up great. The TA mount/bolts/nuts have survived tons of 1.50ish 60's and have yet to come loose. The bolt thru nut stock style design was one of the deciding factors on getting the Strange...The only negative is that my gears are a bit noisey..I quieted them down a hair with Lucas 85w140 oil and the GM additive, but I hear from others that the gears Strange uses tend to be more on the noisey side...I'll be going with 3.90s soon anyway, so I can't complain too much...Other than that its a fine piece...

I'm kinda dreading the gear noise, but I'll do my best to cope. Can't be any worse than the racket my 10-bolt is currently making in its slow, agonizing process of dying.

Well the 12 bolt I get will be one of the quiet ones. (knock on wood)

One can hope right?

Why not go with the Moser 9 inch, which uses the oem style of torque arm bolts?
It is stronger than the 12 bolt rears, and is $2,400.00 shipped. The only problem is you cannot get the 9 inch with only ABS. It is available for those who have ABS/TCS. Bob

Just didn't want to deal with the torque arm mounting clearance...it was really what it boiled down to for me.

Why not buy a bazooka to kill an ant?

Little overkill for my application.

what tq arm clearance issue are you speaking about? so much for bolt in and go. i hear that the 9 inch hits the floor pan on lowered cars do the 12 bolts do the same?

Go on Speed Inc's website, and check out INTMID8's car on there (twin turbo LT-1). He stuffed a 9" under it, lowered, and has lots of underbody pics. You can see where the underbody needed to be clearanced (right where the start of the DS tunnel is looking forward towards the front of the car - where the back of the rear seat on the driver's side is). Not a huge deal, but still has to be dealt with.

As for the 12-bolt, I'm not sure, but I'll find out soon. All indications are that it fits better than the 9" simply due to its pinion placement being a bit more like a 10-bolt's.

Here's a link that shows what I'm talking about:

http://www.ls1speed.com/artwork/intmd8/progress/006.jpg

Look at the left side of the tunnel, and you can see where it has been hammered.

The rest of the pics are here:

Why not kill a whole ant hill instead of one ant?

Overkill is good especially when the price isnt much different. Ive been told up and down to get a 12bolt... but Id still grit my teeth launching on a 12bolt whereas with a 9" Im not even gonna think about it.

I'd still gnash my teeth launching a 9" if it had a posi - 12-bolt and 9" both share that as a weakness. The 9" has better pinion placement, but I'm not sure if that would be enough to keep me worry free.

Hey guys, to further this thread, any clearance issues with any of the aftermarket Torque Arms while using a Strange? Anything to avoid specifically? I'll be going Strange 12-Bolt myself in a few months as I too won't have the car on the road again until the beginning of May.

I'd be happy to let you know how it works with my LG torque arm...
