Default Holy ****!!

I put my car on the lift today to change the pinion seal because it was leaking (again). Well as the gear oil is coming out, my mechanic notices that the oil has some metal in it. The worst part is after i put on the seal and put in about a quart of synthetic 75w 90 to top the oil off, I took it for a drive and now its making a CRAZYYYY WHINING SOUND! wtf to do!

Chunks of metal in the oil is not good. But the new noise you have is the result of not getting the pinion bearing preload reset properly, which is always a risk when changing *only* the pinion seal without a complete teardown to reset the pinion preload *properly*. Now those bearings are shot too.

They weren't like chunks. LIke little metal dust in the oil. I'm just gonna go with some motive 4.10's along with the Ratech Deluxe kit. Should that be sufficient enough?

This is indeed the problem, and I'm surprised more people don't have this problem when replacing the pinion seal. Bob

Hey fastest94v6 does your car make like a winding up sound when your car accelerates and does it get louder as you go faster? I have a 2002 tran am and i think my car is doing the same noise i dont know what the problem really is but i know the noise is coming from the differential an i am wondering if anybody could tell me what the problem might be..

Something like 12 inch lbs of ROLLING resistance on the pinion gear. There is no torque spec for the nut.

You have to pull the carrier out in order to properly set pinion preload. The other way to do it is count the number of threads showing on the pinion BEFORE you take it off, then mark across the pinion and on the nut so when it's tightened back down, you don't drive it on too far.
