Default Why does my 9" suck

I bought a 9" housing and axles from Moser last year,
through Cartek and had them install it.

I had a brand new Detroit locker w/3:50 gears put in.
It was as noisy as hell so I thought the gears where bad.
I put in a new set and still real loud whine.
Next I scraped the locker and got a brand new track
lock.

It was quiet for about 3 weeks but slowly got louder
and louder. Now its as loud as Hell and started to grind. I
pulled it and don't see any damage.

I was WARNED that the Moser housings are made like **** and they are not square,
After measuring the rear wheel location with a nice jig my
friend had at his shop It seems to be off by 1/4" front to
back. I called Moser and they said that about 1/4" is there
typ. tolerance. How is that possible. My housing is
killing center sections left and right at 1000 bucks a pop.
I have only put 3000mi total on everything. WTF am I
going to do with this POS!

I'm in north NJ, Is there anyone around here that can check it to see what wrong with it?
Or do I buy another Moser housing and hope its better then
the first. I would switch to something else but then I would
need a new set of axles and torque arm mount because none
of the ones I've seen are interchangeable or keep abs.

Who can FIX it?

This is killing my fun, a 9" should be the one
part of my car that is indestructible.

I'm guessing the axles are going in crocked and slowly
twisting the gear setup and causing the eventual loud
gear wine. Anyone seen this problem.

Thanks all for the input so far. I'm going nuts with this thing.

I don't think its the bearings because they would have been
bad after the first center section. When I put the second
one in it was dead silent for about 1000 mi, then got worse.
The jig I used squares the tires to each other, not the tires
in the wheelwells, so one tire is 1/4" off kilter from the other.
It locks to one tire then you measure it on the other.
So the LCA's have no bearing on the measurement. I should
have remeasured it with it out of the car with the tires on
but I didn't. I guess I can re assemble it and try that, It would
will no doubt be more accurate.
I just yanked the axels and center yesterday.

It sounds like to me that the housing has toe in it from Moser.. this happens when you weld on the tubes they draw every which way... on a non floater rear end this is a problem... You CAN move the housing with a tourch and ice water the trick is to have a really really accurate way to measure it and make sure your going in the right direction... you can call some places like Speedway Engineering and they will straighten the housing to perfect or as close to it as possible.. it may cost a 100 bucks or so...But like I said if this is the problem its the biggest worry to a do it yourselfer... maintain axle centerline.....

omg the same thing happened to me. i bought mine in august-september of 05'. since i have been through 2 completely new center sections with the same outcome as u. fist one was ould from the begining, the 2nd was silent for 500-600 miles then 2 pulls on the dyno and loud as hell. nobody i take it to or talk to knows why but all say it is the loudest rear they have ever heard. i have another new set of gears and bearings in the garage. its so annoying it makes me want to get rid of the whole car... . it must be a error/mistake on moslers part when building the housing. does anyone in houston know where i can take it to have the housing checked out??? i'm gonna try pyle brothers. and please if you find out what the cause is please send me a pm. and i will do the same for u.
ps i have also added bmr adjustable tq arm, lca's, and panhard rod, and had it all centered/set under the car by mike at icon. no luck there.

I was told to stay away from Moser, but I saw allot of people
running them on here with no problems. I also wanted to keep
the abs and all of the other housings I looked at didn't offer it.

Face it,

its not the gears,

its the housing,

It's not square.

It's JUNK!

Did you spend the extra 100 bucks for a new housing and not an original OE... i did this on both of my housings for my 70 and my WS6...As far as fixing it.. Tex racing might be able to 901 428 9522 or stock car products.. dont know their number

Adjustable suspension won fix the problem... as you guys figured...

If you run a aluminum centersection after a few hundred miles and some good heat soaks it should be removed and have the lash and pre loads check and or adjusted...

No... didn't know about that option.
I had Cartek order it and install it originally.
They charged next to nothing to install it so I just had them put it in.
I have a Currie 9" in my 71, never had a problem.

Thanks for the help, I'll make some calls..

I think a Fab 9 housing can reuse the Moser axles and bearings, not sure about the tQ. arm mount. And I think it retains the ABS.

Does anyone know for sure.

That's kind of crummy. Considering my home-built 8.8" (in a jig) is off none, makes you wonder why the pros can't get it right.

Good luck with it.

It sucks to have to do it, but maybe go with a different brand of housing. Have you ever tried quick performance?

I bolted two 2 foot straight edges to the housing ends.

measured along the bolt holes, spun 90deg measured again, 90deg again, 90deg once more.

l<--B--->l
l==<O>==l
l<--F--->l

^ 61 1/8"F - 61 3/8"B
> 61 3/16"F - 61 3/8"B
V 61 5 16"F - 61 3/16"B
< 61 1/4"F - 61 1/4"B

Leveled the housing on my bench on jack stands, did the same thing.
spun 90 deg, 4 times, each time came out level, so the tubes seem straight.

-l-------l-
l==<O>==l

Then did the same measuring from the mounting plate ends down to the bench.
(all squared and level.)

L------- R
l==<O>==l
V--------V
--------------

got.
6 7/8"L - 7"R
7" L - 7"R
7 3/8"L - 7"R
7 3/8"L - 7 1/4"R

I'm going to send it to some pro's next week to see what they come up with.
It didn't seem to be to far out to me.
