Can anyone tell me why there are two nearly identical threads right on top of each other?

Bob, thanks alot for the information. The steel driveshaft we installed seems to be working just fine with the moser 9" rear. i to half seen the stock aluminum driveshaft fail. Guess more than anything i'm just t'ed off with having to go back and changing the studs. not really sure if that is really the way i want to go, but with the spacer and weld pro stars i have on the rear stud length is my real issue. nhra rules want to see more stud out of the lug nut than i'm getting and i wanted larger then stock dia. studs in the first place. one thing for sure when i'm ready for that aluminum driveshaft exotic performance plus will be hearing from me. again thanks alot bob. wayne

9" all the way. They are a drop out third member housing that allows you to keep more than one third member and you can change them out easier. I keep a steet set and a race set. You can have a spare ready to go in and be done with the swap in an hour. Try doing that with a rear loader. The one thing about the Nine inch I don't like is the factory style posi has clutches on only one side and incliked to burn out quickly and prone to breakage at the "hat." I personally like the Detroit Tru Trak myself. So far it gives very consistent burnouts and very straight launches. It has survived many High rpm launches with slicks and a 4 speed. Just my experience. Moser seems to be the best deal to me last time I paid attention.

IMPORTANT: Most after market housings I have seen have not come with axle seals installed. You must knock in some axle seals or the diff oil will leak into the suposedly sealed axle bearings and cause bearing failure. My friend found seals from a mid '70s lincoln that fit in his. I dont know the exact application as my 9" is a late 1950's housing with small housing ends with moser axles and I set up my own gears.

Good luck.

Henry

You love it because it is quiet? Or because it is strong? Both?

I totally agree. I've heard stories about torque arms and u joints breaking a lot on manuals but not automatics. and just recently my friend broke his torque arm and u joint and the ppl fixing it said that 12 bolts arent as "friendly" with manuals as automatics.

Theres alot of talk of the 9 is stronger than the 12 bolt and i don't dissagree but how strong do some guys need there stuff.I think a 12 bolt can take serious abuse.Isn't a ford 8.8 equal to a 12 bolt as for strenth?I know there is a shitload of mustangs on the nmra board that run them and some of these guys are running 7's with them. And wormboy i belive has a 12 bolt and be is a 7's car also.

Put a 12 bolt into a early Chevelle, Nova, Camaro, etc and you can beat the crap out of it, and not hurt anything. Put one into one of our cars with a torque arm, make a couple 4000 to 5000 dragstrip launches, and I can just about guarantee you'll pick up gear noise. If it is a drag only car, you'll never know or care about the gear noise. Drive your car home from the track, and the noise will **** you off. I think the torque arm stresses the 12 bolt housing, causing distortion. We have never seen this happen with the 9 inch housing. Bob

12 bolt = some risk, were as a 9" = a lot less risk (if any) for just a few dollars more and a little more weight.

Auto or manual, make no difference ... both can and have broken 12 bolts. "Do it right the first time" .. right?

IF .. someone fell into a super deal on a 12 bolt (>$500 diff.), I could see how they could rationalize the "risk".

Just my .02

Yes, I will be getting a 9"!

The 9 inch rears go by UPS, as the fully assembled center section arrives in a plastic case, ready to bolt into the housing, making UPS an option as the parts then are under their weight limits.
The 9 inch weighs a little more than the 12 bolt, but the extra strength found in the 9 inch is worth it. Bob

forged yoke or billet ?
what posi ?
what gear case ?
