where would the scoring occur, on the axle bearings? May be due to low fluid level. They can be cleaned up or even turned town on a lathe to be used with axle saver bearings if needed, i have never done this, i have just heard of people doing it

Scoring is on the shaft and it can not be turned. I have had 3 rear ends in this car in 60,000 mi. The fluid has been new each time. The rear end has never leaked. Go figure.

I understand the scoring occours on the shaft, where on the shaft? where the axle bearings make contact?

It looks close to that area, about an inch from the end. the tech says it happens to jeep products alot. Old chevy vans had that problem also.

MAN! Three times? Whats up with that? Installer error? Just curious.
Sounds like you need to buy 2 axels and bearings, not a hard thing to accomplish, if that of course is ALL that is wrong.

First off try different brand of lube next time although I seriously doubt this is the cause of your trouble.

Three failures on the axle race is not defective axles theres something else wrong here. Impossible to guesstimate without taking a look at your set up back there. Maybe some components are rubbing/misaligned etc. etc. etc. It could be a combination of things. More info needed

To clarify the problems--The first rear end was not set up correctly from the factory --after about 10,000 mi it whined like an old cat. The tech that replaced it apparently did not get it right, so it went bad again. The last guy who fixed the ring and pinion set up at the dealer did a nice job. All of this was free of cost--just a pain taking it back. The grinding noise that started at about 66,000 mi was different. We thought it was just the passenger side bearing, when they got it apart they found the problem with the shaft. Now I have new shafts & bearings-- a quite rear end and a 12 month warranty.

i dont know exactly what happened to mine, but my car broke an axle in october. dont know if it had weak points caused from something like you mentioned or what, it was just kind of a shock to see a broken axle instead of a broken torsen.

Makes sense now. My guess is when the first set up went bad the shaving spray that comes off the grinding parts gets stuck all over the inside of the axle tubes and whatnot. Most important thing on internal repairs is to clean all that crap out or it will only happen again... which is what sounds like happened to you.

All those shavings and chunks flying around in there will wreak havoc on bearings in no time. It doesn't take much... For safety sake you may want to stick a magnet on either end of the axle tubes just in case. I believe all the stock covers have a magnet but regardless cant hurt to stick more on.

One year warranty is decent... I would guess again if there are going to be more troubles they will show up sooner rather than later. Best of luck
