Default Used Ring/Pinion Set Up

Can a used 3.42 gear set be used without noise? I am buying a used Strange 12 bolt which had a 3.42 ratio. It is disassembled now. Can the gear set be reused without noise if set up correctly or will I need new gears? The gears show no signs of wear. The gears are whatever Strange originally installed.

If I must get new ones is there a gear that is quieter than another? Oem cut vs performance cut? Best place to buy?

If you set it up the exact same way you should be fine. I have a set of 3.23s in my car now i robbed from a 6cyl rear end and they are quiet as can be. Jut check your contact pattern, if its good go with it.

I would but I just spin anything under 40mph now. Am working on better tires soon. Will a oem or street gear be quieter than a performance gear? If so who sells 12 bolt street/oem gear sets?

go to strange's site, they sell them,

performance gears usually have more nickel in the gears, making them stronger, they are also a lil louder. OEM is quiter, but not as strong..hope that helped.

if it howels though, the gear is set wrong and you should kick your mechanic in the ball sack.

Been running used 3.42s in my 3.23 original rear,
for at least 10K miles now, still dead quiet and
no trouble.

OE gears will -stay- quieter than "race" gears up
until you crack off teeth, race gears are usually a
more ductile iron to take abuse at expense of wear.

Where whine is more likely to come from, is some
deformation of the crush collar from getting beat on
after the original setup. A hard pinion spacer & shims
are slightly more work at install, but will not deform.
